Ohaka Ga Nai (I Need A Gravestone!)
This Japanese black comedy from 1998 is about a wealthy, spoiled actress who discovers she is suffering from a fatal illness and has little time to live. But her biggest worry is that she never picked out a burial plot, and so sets out to find the most appropriate spot for a grave. Oshimas score is a pleasant potpourri of pretty ballads, jaunty tunes for clarinet, a few suspense cues, and an opera vocal (Puccini's Nessun Dorma). The music is mostly upbeat, because in the process of her quest the actress also reconnects with society and finds a renewed interest in life. Thus the whole thing ends with a vocal of What a Wonderful World.
A longer version of the pretty theme tune appears on the compilation Cinema Music Best and is titled I Want My Grave. This was apparently recorded just for that release as it does not appear on the OST. Its the same tune as I Need A Gravestone on this OST, but is more drawn out.
17 tracks on Stand Up CD # SUCA-0002. Released in 1998.
