A separate soundtrack featuring Clint Mansell and Lorne Balfe’s music was originally set for release today by Lakeshore Records, but appears to have been canceled or postponed indefinitely :(

Damn, I was really looking forward to it. Wonder why, seems like it's almost unheard of for scores by major composers and/or for major films to not be released these days. Hopefully they're just putting it off for a few weeks or something... or hopefully it'll get leaked soon.

Man.... I wanna see the movie ... again.
Fuck you Whitewashing assholes with no life of your own.
Thank God, a movie based on my favorite mangaka...is actually a good damn movie. There was love in the production and you feel that. They knew very well how ghost in the shell works. THE MAJOR problem is that everyone speaks high of the 1995 movie, which is way aside the original source material. 1995 movie, manga, and stand alone complex.... all together in this movie in cohesive plot working better the existence philosophy and technology dependency then the 1995 movie. AND I fucking love the 1995 movie, but its not that perfect as everyone claims, there are issues with it.
this all issue of whitewashing is utterly nonsensical. like I said, they have nothing better to do then complain.
Movie IS GOOD. and an alternate retelling. Thank God, because I dont want to see the same again, when I already know what will happen.

I saw it today and enjoyed it. The visual and soundtrack were top notch. I feel that the story was interesting but would have benefited from a long run time to flesh out more of the characters and plot. My only real gripe was that the city scenes felt to empty for such a huge metropolis. It sucks that the soundtrack was delayed :(

That's a shame about the score, not to mention unusual! It had an interesting sort of 80s synthy vibe which I wasn't expecting. I really hope it gets a release at some point. And I agree re. the movie: saw it opening day in the UK and they did a great job with it, overall, especially visually.

I am glad, however, that this OST has the Ki:Theory cover of Enjoy The Silence from the trailer, and Kenji Kawaii's updated mix of the theme from the original anime. Amazing.

Orie
04-02-2017, 03:05 AM
actually.... kenji kawai made a new song for this movie. it mixes part of the theme of the first movie, and the second movie theme, AND with new added lyrics.
I was watching the credits with my bro, and we noticed the the parts of the music from those themes, and suddenly new lyrics came. I did a serach.... there is a reason why this is "Theme" IV. I , II and III are in the original movie.
I was not expecting the retro style music too, but nowadays, that style is related to cyberpunk, and ghost in the shell is cyberpunk.

While I can see the point of those calling the movie out for casting a non-asian lead (though in this case, I disagree,) I did think it was cute how the movie incorporated Motoko Kusanagi into the story. You could almost interpret it as a nod to the outcry, seeing how "Mira"'s appearance was deliberately chosen (presumably by Cutter.)

Regardless, I was never a big fan of the series (LOVED the PS1 game, though,) and I wasn't blown away by this movie either. I liked it well enough, probably enough to buy the Blu-ray, but the score really did stand out to me as one of the best things in the movie. I really hope the score sees a release soon.

Although it's not an acceptable replacement for a release of the actual score, I have to say this actually is a really well put together soundtrack. Most of the songs would've fit in the film perfectly, as opposed to being a random bunch of tracks like you often find on these 'Inspired By' releases.

Hmm not really. Only the Utai IV Reawakening in some way. I don't recall any of the tracks being used in the movie, except for the end-credits. A shame. Personally i really don't liked the score for the movie, but still i would like to hear it a bit better. Still hoping for a release..

Or that it leaks at some point... it could happen.

It's strange: there was a novelization of the film supposed to be out April 3rd, which has been listed on Amazon and other sites for weeks with a placeholder cover, and it just didn't happen. Now it's TBC, but still with the option of pre-ordering. Not the same as a score release, I know, but it's related merchandise all the same.

I want an explaination regarding why the score release was cancelled. It's so bizarre in this day and age. Not even a digital only one?

Killgrave

The film underperformed by about $20 million. Paramount execs finally admitted the "whitewashing" of the Major hurt the film's chances. The film is going to take a financial bath of $60 - 100 million. Everybody is running scared. As JFK said "victory has 100 fathers and defeat is an orphan."

Orie

When you take a Japanese character and make her white for no other reason than you're worried audiences won't come to movie that features a non-white lead, it's more than "crap." The biggest movie franchise in the world, "Fast & Furious", features a multi cultural cast. Dwayne Johnson, right now the most popular action star in films, is of Polynesian extraction. Hollywood needs to catch up to the changes in world culture.

Orie
04-07-2017, 10:44 PM
the reason is ADAPTATION!!!! something people still dont get. To Adapt. I am a fan, and I see no problem. Japanese dont even give a fuck! "white people defending japanese, when they dont give a shit about white people issues" - someone said.

Killgrave
04-07-2017, 10:59 PM
It's not adaptation, it's appropriation. Adaptation is taking The Seven Samurai, transposing it to the American West and calling itThe Magnificent Seven. Adaptation is taking Yojimbo and making A Fistful of Dollars. Adaptation is taking Eastwood's Unforgiven and creating the samurai drama Yurusarezaru mono.

Originally led by two white guys, with a fan base built over 16 years, with a very simple concept - fast cars race and explode. Not quite the same as a high concept sci-fi film based on an anime, which is still relatively niche in the grand scheme of things to general audiences. And as much as the coverage of the 'controversy' surrounding ScarJo's casting may have impacted the film's performance thus far, there's no guarantee it would've done better domestically with a non-famous Japanese actress in the lead. It might have totally bombed. There's no way of knowing.

It was hard for me to take a lot of the complaints seriously when people just kept throwing 'Asian' around. If The Major is 'Asian', she's Japanese. It's not one size fits all. That's pretty damn insensitive in and of itself.

Killgrave
04-07-2017, 11:22 PM
Diesel has said in interviews he's multi-racial so it's one white guy. And look at the cast: pretty diverse racially. That's one reason the series is so successful: people want to see themselves represented on screen. The complexion of America is changing: in twenty years Latinos will be country's pre-dominant race.

Another reason for the series success: changed from racing to adventure, of the caper variety.

And if's you're going to go full high concept then go full out. Cast actors that resemble those in the anime. Japan has some outstanding actors. Rila Fukushima would have made a great Motoko. (And fully commit to the anime's themes: the movie just sort of nibbled at the edges.)

If you're going to fail, fail because you were true to the source material.

Oooh. Didn't notice the new lyrics, Orie. I'll have to listen again. I find the whole history of the song, how it's written in the structural format of a Bulgarian folk song with Japanese vocal stylings quite fascinating.
