The musical Golem takes grand historical narrative of the history of ancient Jewish Prague during the time of Emperor Rudolf II. The story takes place precisely in the nearby vicinity Theatre Hybernia's former church.
The story based less on Gustav Meyrink's novel Der Golem, nor does it have anything to do with the film The Emperor and the Golem. The authors wrote a scenario very loosely based on the diverse range of legends about the mysterious creature, which is to stand up to protect Jews and built a completely new story, which is set in late 16th century when in Prague tensions grew between the inhabitants of the Jewish ghetto of Prague and Christians.
The love between the Jewish girl Rebecca and the Christian youth Vojta is a major plot line of the new story, only characters with Golem legend inextricably linked, such as Rabbi Loew or Emperor Rudolf II.
The story of the Golem musical is built so that it is not only about the causes that led to the creation and subsequent destruction of the Golem, but to be mainly about love between two young people whose relationship is growing in spite of the time unacceptable was the fact that he is a Christian and she comes from the Jewish ghetto. Love, suspense, humor, mystery, alchemy and mysterious voices of ancestors - all this contains an entirely new version of the story of the Golem, who had the ability to love and could not fulfill the mission for which it was called for ...
The musical premiered November 23, 2006 in the newly opened theater Hybernia. Compared to musicals like Dracula (Thread 213897), Golem was not very successful. Critics called it "uninspired", "cheesy" and "a shadow compared to the original source material". It is also rumored this was the reason of Karel Svoboda's suicide in 2007.
