England, 1872. After the death of her parents, Isabel Archer (Nicole Kidman), a young American woman, travels to Europe with her aunt to enjoy her freedom. Isabel receives marriage proposals from the English Lord Warburton
(Richard E. Grant) and Caspar Goodwood (Viggo Mortensen), an American industrialist - both declined by her. A close friendship develops between Isabel and her sick cousin Ralph Touchett (Martin Donovan). After her uncle's death,
she inherits a considerable sum that brings her independence and allows her to travel the world.

In Florence she meets the American Gilbert Osmond (John Malkovich). She marries him with the influence of Madame Merle (Barbara Hershey), a friend of her aunt. The couple moves to Rome. Gilbert proves to be a loveless husband. Isabel has the feeling that he married her only because of the money. She suffers in silence. He forbids his daughter Pansy (Valentina Cervi) to marry her love Ned Rosier. Isabel learns that Madame Merle is the mother of Pansy
and feels deceived.

To the annoyance of her husband, Isabel returns to England to look after her dying cousin Ralph. Before leaving, she promises to Pansy to return. There, Goodwood tries to persuade her to leave Osmond for him.
Isabel then returns to Rome.
