George Melachrino (born George Miltiades (1909-65) was one of the most prolific Pop Instrumental recording artists of the late 40s & 1950s; his albums were also known for their audiophile sound by hifi enthusiasts. The Melachrino Strings recorded their first Christmas album, “Christmas in High Fidelity” in 1954 utilising a pre-stereo multi track binaural process. The brilliant arrangements were by William Hill-Bowen (1918-64) who worked closely with Melachrino for many years before headlining his own orchestra. “Christmas in High Fidelity” was a best seller and in 1958 Melachrino recorded a genuine stereo Christmas LP in RCA’s “Living Stereo”, also a best seller, titled “Christmas Joy”, recreating or updating many of Bowen’s arrangements in a fuller orchestral sound and adding some new ones by Bert Thompson. “Christmas Joy” was released on CD in 2015 but the minimally mastered sound is less than stellar, in my opinion. “Christmas in High Fidelity” was released on CD on Collector's Choice label in 1999 but in monaural and is now out of print. In 2010, I remastered both albums from tape sources and remixed and combined Bowen’s binaural & stereo arrangements of the same songs into single longer ones. Although this sounds somewhat bizarre, the end result is quite musically satisfying, in my opinion. Bowen’s combined arrangements become 5+ minute Christmas tone poems in this configuration. I hope this expanded version of Melachrino’s two Christmas albums brings you some “Christmas Joy” this Holiday Season.
