What a year 1990 was for Danny Elfman! “Edward Scissorhands”, “Nightbreed”, “Darkman” and “Dick Tracy”. After his breakthrough score for Batman, the year prior, he, along with Steve Bartek and Shirley Walker, was on a roll. He really rocked the quiet world of Film Music and instantly became a recognizable and meaningful voice. For me, “Dick Tracy” was the weakest score of the 4 that year but it may be due to its short length (35 min) and constrains imposed by the time period and/or last minute cuts from Warren Beatty. Like for Batman, we were lucky enough to get a separated album release considering the heavy promotions on Prince for “Batman” and Madonna for “Dick Tracy”.
I’d be very interested to revisit this score in light of this expanded release. PM sent.

Negative. There aren't any detailed liner notes for each and every cue individually, which was somewhat of a let down for me. The liner notes are more or less just a generic overview of the movie and Elfman working on the score. Also, the new cues as a whole are not representative of the complete score. Some of the original album cues contain film version of cues and are not present on the new tracks. So there are portions of the score that are only on the older album. But it is a great set nonetheless. Supposedly some of the original session tapes/source elements that were used to make the 1990 album are now lost which is why the newer tracks are missing some parts of the score heard in the film.
