ok links are dead for Isolated Score 1, I just want to know what is it?
Were did it come from, the source?
I have Obsession with Bernard Herrmann's PSYCHO score I bought the OST from ebay for $94.00, the OST is a very very bad recording, I don't know if that was meant due to the B & W and budget of the film, or were they recorded it?
Somebody posted the Laser Disc Isolated Score which was really good, better then the OST and broken into tracks instead of 8 track suites.
I have the VSD Joel McNeely Complete Re-recording which is Fantastic but slower speed then the actual film even Bernard Herrmann's own re-recording is slower then the film soundtrack, but both Great!
I just want the info if anybody has the time, thanks and have a Great Week!

Has anyone every seen a Complete Danny Elfman Score for PSYCHO the Remake?

The right part of the double cover in the first part is, of course, the cover from the Varese re-recording by McNeely, while the left part shows the cover from the 7-track Soundstage Records bootleg (SCD-585, 1998), total track time: 49:00 min. The back cover states "Digitally remastered from the original session taps [sic!]", and on the back of the 4-page booklet, you are informed, that "This historic recording was originally made on high quality analog equipment. We feel this compact disc transfer, made from the original master tapes, is a testimony to our dedication to preserving the fidelity and clarity of the original source." But in the archive entry of "soundtrackcollector.com" for that release, ther is a comment to this bootleg stating: "This is the only CD released to date that contains the original instrumental score as heard in the film. This is a pressed bootleg CD with inferior sound quality, despite claims (on back insert) of having been "digitally remastered"." Well, there's nothing to add!

The original score was conducted by Herrmann himself in Hollywood (1960), but it seems no original master tapes have survived, to create a pristine release as we would like. What was available seems to be second or third grade material, and the 33-track so-called "Isolated score" is the best version I know of. Then there is, of course, the re-recording by Herrmann himself (early 70ies, released by Phase4/Decca), and the great McNeely version, but both suffer from too slow tempos, as you already remarked.

The Danny Elfman version for the 1998 remake of "Psycho" is an interesting one: The speed is virtual identical to Herrmann's original recording. The reason may be artistic adherence to the master's own original rendition of the score, but also had a practical one: the movie was a frame-by-frame remake of Hitchcocks original film, so all cues HAD to have more or less the same length as the original ones.

To answer your question: Yes, the Elfman recording was released in 1998 by Virgin Records America (catalog no. 72438 47657 2 9 - 22 tracks, about 32 min. total time), but apparently it's not complete. I don't know if a complete version of that score was ever available.
