The Hungarian composer Mikl�s R�zsa began writing film music at the suggestion of Arthur Honegger
after achieving only moderate success with his early concert music. He went on to score ninety-five films,
including some of the most famous cinematic works of all time. Here Rumon Gamba, a great champion of
film music, conducts the BBC Philharmonic in some of R�zsa’s best-loved scores.

The music composed for Alexander Korda’s London Films Company between 1937 and 1942 is imbued with an a
mazing freshness and magical melodic expression. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the colourful scores for
The Thief of Bagdad and Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Book, suites from which are presented on this
recording. The first encompasses the major events of the plot in its seven movements. The second abounds with
leitmotifs, the score being more than just background music as each character has its own theme. R�zsa’s score
for the World War II film Sahara is appropriately hard-hitting and the suite encapsulates all the major themes of
the film. The music for Ben-Hur is regarded by many as the composer’s magnum opus among the film
scores, winning R�zsa an Oscar in 1960. Befitting the epic film production, it features a large orchestra and
the suite comprises six key moments from the film.

"The Chandos label has issued some fine recordings of classic film music, and this release featuring scores
by Mikl�s R�zsa is especially nice. The BBC Philharmonic under Rumon Gamba outdoes itself; the MediaCity
sound is superb; and the notes by Andrew Knowles are unusually detailed. But the real attraction is the music
of R�zsa himself, which is well represented by these four scores that cover a two-decade period. What's striking
is how timeless his scores seem. The earliest of the four, The Thief of Baghdad, was finished in 1940 but has
any number of features that, with very slight tweaking, would make it suitable for a film released today. R�zsa
combined percussion-heavy sounds influenced by Bart�k and Stravinsky with expansive pure Romantic melodies
for the scenes of love and sentiment, a combination unlike anything being done in concert music at the time.
The mix had unusual flexibility, enabling R�zsa to evoke the swashbuckling Thief of Baghdad, the still more
exotic Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book, the dramatic adventure of Sahara, and the epic Ben Hur, a film that
truly would not be imaginable without its score, all without having to depart from his basic idea. It is not
formulaic but rather original enough to encompass many strands of film in the middle 20th century, and
there's a great deal of satisfying listening to be had here for film music fans."
