Description

In 1997, VAP released their Akira Ifukube Unreleased Film Music Complete Works series. Mostly known by their secondary title, the Film Composer Selection series, it consists of six volumes overall. Each volume is dedicated to Ifukube's music from films produced by a certain studio, with the exception of the sixth volume, which is music to a shadow puppet play by artist Seiji Fujishiro. While I do have them all, I will not be able to upload the first and last volumes here (or PM) at this time.

The following are the volumes in the series:

Akira Ifukube Unreleased Film Music Complete Works Daiei Edition: Zatoichi Series/Sleepy Eyes of Death Series (VPCD-81186)
Akira Ifukube Unreleased Film Music Complete Works Shochiku Edition: The Last Samurai (VPCD-81187)
Akira Ifukube Unreleased Film Music Complete Works Toei Edition: Shinran/Thirteen Assassins (VPCD-81188)
Akira Ifukube Unreleased Film Music Complete Works Nikkatsu Edition: The Burmese Harp/Scoundrels of the Sea (VPCD-81189)
Akira Ifukube Unreleased Film Music Complete Works Iwanami Films Edition: Sakuma Dam Trilogy (VPCD-81190)
Akira Ifukube Unreleased Film Music Complete Works Seiji Fujishiro Shadow Puppet Play: The Humpbacked Pony (VPCD-81191)

Secondary Titles:

Film Composer Selection Daiei (VPCD-81186)
Film Composer Selection Shochiku (VPCD-81187)
Film Composer Selection Toei (VPCD-81188)
Film Composer Selection Nikkatsu (VPCD-81189)
Film Composer Selection Iwanami Films (VPCD-81190)
Film Composer Selection Seiji Fujishiro Shadow Puppet Play (VPCD-81191)

This is the fifth volume, Akira Ifukube Unreleased Film Music Complete Works Iwanami Films Edition: Sakuma Dam Trilogy, or Film Composer Selection Nikkatsu. This volume covers music Akira Ifukube composed for documentaries produced by Iwanami Films. Iwanami Films, also known as Iwanami Productions, is a now defunct documentary film studio. The album features music from the Sakuma Dam Trilogy (1954 - 1957), including the score to "Sakuma Dam Part 2" (1955). Also features selected cues from "Baluchaung Project" (1960), "Tenryu River" (1952), "Hokkaido" (1955) and "Disaster - The Mount Tanigawa Records" (1957). In all, this release contains music from seven films. All music is in mono. Released on March 1, 1997.

This is my favorite volume from this series. I'm pretty obsessed with Ifukube's music to the Sakuma Dam Trilogy. Like with the other volumes, fans of Akira Ifukube's Godzilla and other special effects film scores will recognize quite a bit of stuff here.

First off, tracks 2 and 5 are a case where a portion of the Godzilla Theme was used before any Godzilla films. Portions of those tracks will be modified several months later in "Godzilla" (1954), as cues M14 (Godzilla Comes Ashore) and MA' (Fury of Godzilla). This familiar bit of material is reprised on track 20, and screams "Godzilla". The earliest I've heard this portion of the future Godzilla Theme was in a 1950 Shintoho film starring Toshiro Mifune. Tracks 6 and 21 will be reused in "Godzilla vs. Destroyah" (1995). Tracks 10 and 26 will eventually be modified into a portion of the Operation L March in "War of the Gargantuas" (1966). Tracks 33, 34 and 40 will be reworked as the Infant Island Theme for "Mothra vs. Godzilla" (1964) and "Godzilla vs. Mothra" (1992), among some other of Ifukube's special effects scores. Track 38 will eventually end up as the Mechagodzilla Theme in "Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla" (1993). Track 42 will be in "King Kong vs. Godzilla" (1962), and was heard in three cues in that film. Track 45 will be reworked in "Battle in Outer Space" (1959). Lastly, track 47 is a heavily modified Prayer for Peace from "Godzilla".

As for my favorite track on this album, that goes to track 10.

As a side note, I want to point out that the seven cues from "Sakuma Dam Part 1" on this album are the earliest surviving recordings of any Ifukube score released on CD. These recordings even predate Ifukube's score to "Godzilla"! All other of Ifukube's film music material released on CD up to this point had to be taken directly from the films' audio tracks.

Links

I posted some selected tracks from this album over at the Godzilla Scores (Sharebee) thread here on the forums a few years ago. I eventually stated at that thread that I would upload the complete album, but that never happened. At last, this album has finally been uploaded! There are two links to choose from, both are uncompressed RAR files. The first link is for the version in WAV, and the other is for the MP3 version. These are fresh rips that I made just a few hours ago. As I said above, included with the links is a simple PDF of both track lists.

The links are no longer available. Please do not request the links. All requests will be ignored.

Final Remarks

I hope that you will enjoy this fantastic album. If you encounter any issues, please let me know. Enjoy!

You're welcome! VAP released quite a bit of obscure material from Akira Ifukube. Their first Ifukube release were recordings of "Symphonic Fantasia" (1983). In 1996, they released four volumes of his stage works, which were scores for specific stage plays. Then, this six volume series was released in 1997. Later that year, they released a two disc set of Ifukube's work for Toho, along with the compilation Melodious Compile. It was thrilling to discover all of these albums!
