Thanks a lot for sharing this.

I've no interest in the film, especially since I noticed Arrius' role is cut. As for the score...compared to Beltrami's work for Gods of Egypt, it's a total disappointment. Compared to two Ben Hur scores I vastly enjoy - Rozsa and Carl Davis...HAHA.

Beltrami didn't have as much freedom or time writing this one, I think. Once the score got to more action, it sounds like a poor attempt at emulating Remote Control/Zimmer Gladiator and just isn't exciting at all. Complete disappointment. 2/5 Back to Gods of Egypt for me! (Besides the early tracks, this just wasn't worth the time).

But Ben Hur is so boring , music I mean. it's a total disappointment. The only good tracks are BEN HUR THEME,Messala and Tirzah,Horse Healer,

I'm disappointed to read this.

I was hoping for a Gods of Egypt esque score as well, but from what tosheii speaks of, I suppose it isn't.
It makes me wonder if the score turned out the way Beltrami intended it to be, or if, as tosheii said, he didn't have as much freedom. Either way, that's a shame.

Nor am I. Hopefully the movie is as bad as the score and it will bomb so hard that no studio will ever attempt to remake a classic like Ben-Hur (yes I know the Charlton Heston one is a remake, but that's different) ever again. I pray I've long been dead the day a Lawrence of Arabia remake comes along.

NEVER.

If so, it be done right. But remakes don't usually get it right, so, yeah. NEVER.

That won't happen. Studios want to win more money than spend. They aren't THAT stupid. THEY KNOW Lawrence de Arabia cannot ever be reprised. Don't worry about that.

That is right, but the studio heads give them the money so they have the last say in everything.

Let's be real guys. Remakes will happen, but not of masterpieces like Lawrence of Arabia. They are untouchable and Sony knows that. It's impossible to do it again, and besides it's pointless.

Yeah that's what I meant when I said I know the Charlton Heston version is a remake. It's different because it was 1959. Back in a time when almost all movies were good. All About Eve. A Streetcar Named Desire. Some Like It Hot. Psycho. What do we have today? Teen Mom and Jem and the Hollograms.

HAHAHAHAHA... oh man, how many last straws have I left at this point before Hollywood is dead to me. Maybe after John Williams retires. Anyway, the music is not written by an artist and meant to express some profound feelings or to be remembered in any shape or form, it's a corporate product to please 13 year olds who love loud stuff to make a shitton of money. Just like 99,99% of everything else in Hollywood. And people never seem to get tired of this stuff... how many quadrizillion poweranthems with loud drums layered on top have we heared at this point? And it's happening to a fucking Ben-Hur remake... motherfucking Ben-Hur... once a name associated with one of the most beautiful, lyrical and soultouching epic film scores ever composed. I'm glad nobody from the Golden Era is alive today to see and hear this idiocracy.

Maybe Adorno was right afterall.

Regarding Lawrence: It's getting a remake, along with Back to the Future, Taxi Driver, Starship Troopers, Gone with the Wind and Zulu. I bet all my money on it. Remember it's not what the films are about, it's about brand recognition and marketability. Just look at Ghostbusters. Maybe we should put an end to Hollywood board meetings before they fully intend to erase all these great films and scores from existence in favor of their new shiny manufactured toys. And all just for money... fuck everything. From my point of view the Hollywood of today is the antithesis of culture. And when you research how this "dream factory" once began and what ideals it once defended... makes you really reflect on things (Christ I'm becoming old).

Jeze! Have any of you actually at least watch the trailer?!
The movie is a modern day action pic... and that's what composers are hired to score! Not your imagination of what it should be like or score a new movie with approach completely out of place and severly dated as the 1959 version and then get fired for not following demands and requirements of the filmmakers or what the movie they are supposed to work on demands!

The score is excellent in my book!

Did you just say the 1959 version is dated? It holds up marvelously to this day still. Are you the type of dude that says everything old sucks? Because if so then you suck.

Vinphonic
08-05-2016, 12:27 PM
A good story is never dated, no matter the recording quality and limitations of the time. The only thing that people probably mean when they say "dated" is the recording quality of the sound and the music. Because the Blu-Ray looks absolutely astonishing, a time when theater and film shared common qualities. Films were more of stage plays those days and hundreds of people placed great care in "telling a tale". Sure money making was always part of the process of filmmaking, but never the primary driving force like it is now. Anyway rerecord all of Rozsa's score today with the London Symphony Orchestra and it would blow everything away: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ueS07YbMeUw

That's right. You cannot expect a masterful score from a similar movie (well, it may happen but that's extremely rare).
It's pointless to even try to compare this new movie to even half of the classic one, same for thei respective scores.

I also can understand your "dated" thing about the classic score... It's a completely different approach to film scoring, and especcially for very young people (like me), it's quite difficult to approach those scores with full pleasure. Especcially for me, that I'm very attracted by Zimmer's blockbuster scores...

I have. It's terrible. Listen to Gods of Egypt by the same composer. It ticks off all of what you said and might not be a necessarily good film, but the same composer spoke about how he got to make grandiose themes for it in the vein of older Hollywood films. That score sounds modern, but the style of composing, the sweeping epic feel, it is still there in many of the tracks. I can't see any reason why people would defend the Ben Hur remake, a classic example of Hollywood greed (and stupidity), but each to own (there IS some good score in here like others have said...just it's been mastered terribly and it's far and few between imo). I think many of us were expecting more of what style of score, not another Zimmer clone.
