This is so damn true it hurts  Though Evangelion and Anno fans like my bro love that, some others just don't like that it's not original. I agree in that aspect.

Right, I had heard a sample of that a couple of days ago. I became a little excited, then realized just today that they sound more like demos, and they are rather short. Regardless, I appreciate that it's included here.

Moreover, I still greatly prefer these renditions: The Longest Day III (http://216.227.134.162/ost/rebuild-of-evangelion-evangelion-1.0-you-are-not-alone-original-soundtrack/xtmsblsnli/18-the-longest-day-iii.mp3), Bataille Dcisive (http://216.227.134.162/ost/rebuild-of-evangelion-evangelion-1.0-you-are-not-alone-original-soundtrack/cmucjqxvvz/20-battaille-decisive.mp3)

In consideration that, if Sagisu was going to re-use older material, he should've gone all-out. I mean with longer duration, and actually performed with an orchestra as like the tracks above. I'm a bit disappointed.

You mean a cue that probably wasn't even made by the composer himself? He was rather lucky to have gotten away with it then, but the Bond estate really needs to sue him if that's still the case.

I've never called myself an Evangelion fan. I've barely ever seen anything Evangelion related much. My bro is the one that loves it, an Anno stuff, ever since he saw it at the age of 13 and it fucked him up badly, left him like WTF all the time.. cuz it was shown in TV at the time of juvenile shows.. so he thought it was something normal and then WOAH FUCK'S THIS? XD My bro loves Evangelions and its music so I've already passed him the links for these two new Sagisu albums, hope he appreciates it and loves it. I hope one day I will watch Evangelion for the first time ever with my bro so he can watch my WTF IS THIS SHIT face, but not today, my brain is not prepared for that fuckery

Hunter, none of those two replies you quoted were directed at you, at all, and you got it all wrong? The cue has nothing to do with Bond. The cue we're talking about, Decisive Battle, is featured in Evangelion, and was an original composition by Shiro Sagisu himself. It's not stolen. It's just him using a variation of his theme for Evangelion at the request of Anno or because he liked it too, I dunno. Some just don't like that he didn't go all original.

Coincidence is more likely, though I wonder what his inspiration. Considering anime can take a lot of western influence, maybe Shiro listened to Barry? Who knows.

Still too damn similar.

Maybe it's because I'm having flashbacks of a silly lawsuit between two artists that had a diapute that one of them should've had credit for a tune that sounded similar to a tune they made in an earlier group.

The fans clearly had no idea what the actual situation was, and neither knew what sampling was.

"Persecution of the masses (1172)/上陸" and "Who will know (24_bigslow_strings) (ボーナストラック)" don't sound necessarily new, but I know they're not re-used. Perhaps just a little similar to a cue or two from Rebuild 2.0.

End of Eva

The only thing about The End of Evangelion that bothered me was the way they pronounced 'Eva'. They spoke it as you would with an 'e' instead of an 'a'. The latter being how it should be pronounced.

I don't get it, was it a miscommunication between the staff and voice actors?

I've been meaning to listen to that particular soundtrack. But because I've been rather nervous to listen to things I'm not familiar with recently, it's on hold. I want to pick the right moment. I don't want to all come tumbling down, tumbling down, tumbling down.

I meant the score.

"too much ugly dudes", who the fuck runs Kotaku?

They'll probably reboot Godzilla with effeminate Jpop stars.

I'm fine with the movie being like that.
Some of the older Godzilla movies didn't show much Godzilla and was largely human story.
Godzilla was first an afterschool special with a moral at the end.
They do have a lot of rock 'em sock 'em flicks.
But the story ones can be just as entertaining.

Biolante wasn't a box office action movie and I find it to be one of the finest Godzilla movies.

Anyone in this thread an actual Godzilla fan?

When this release was in pre-production, it was called an "Original Soundtrack" later changed to "Music Collection" as there apparently wasn't enough original material composed for the movie to see a full soundtrack. Sagisu is no stranger to including variants, edits and the like on his works -- he tends to dump the cutting room floor onto the discs!

I'll agree the EVA music is a cheap tie-in albeit fan service to EVA fans.

Also, not surprisingly, King Records is going full price on this and the Outtakes from Evangelion which can too be criticized for having few original tracks on it.

I really like the evening news/jazz track, reminds me a lot of Sagisu's Skull Man soundtrack.

When this release was in pre-production, it was called an "Original Soundtrack" later changed to "Music Collection" as there apparently wasn't enough original material composed for the movie to see a full soundtrack.
I don't really know about that theory. I mean "ongaku shu" was pretty much the standard before "original soundtrack" so this might as well be a throwback or whatever random reason. I guess it doesn't matter to me.

You know what's funny is that he's been recycling a lot of old music that doesn't belong in the production it's featured in. The score to Evangelion 3.0 lifts quite a few pieces from Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water and the production codes for it make me think he's borrowed from some of his other works too.

Just out of curiosity, was this recorded in London with a studio orchestra like Evangelion? Sounds like the same choir, at least.

Are the Ifukube tracks new recordings or literally the same ones recorded back in the day (I haven't had a chance to listen yet, myself)? As GGC said, Sagisu does recycle tracks from time to time but they're almost always new recordings. 3.0's Nadia tracks, for instance, are thoroughly re-arranged and beefed up compared to the originals.

Same with Kare Kano, which has interloped Evangelion Rebuild soundtracks. Another note since I don't have the credits, "Jerry" is noted bass and drummer/percussionist Gerry Brown, another Sagisu first call musician.

Well, Gerry, or "Jerry" does a pretty kickass job on the percussion in those tracks. :p

---------- Post added at 01:27 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:02 PM ----------

Here's something I thought I would try: a combination of the tracks "EM20_Jerry_GZM_full (ボーナストラック)" and "EM20_Godzilla/再始動". This is an excerpt from the section of "Jerry" that "Godzilla" can play over. I like it much better, it feels like a more complete variation, and less like a stem, which most of the EM20s seem to be. It's like only having percussion and piano in one while missing the strings, which reside in another.

This was extremely easy to do, because - as I mentioned before, their similar being to stems, therefore you could pretty much just throw some or all of the EM20 tracks into Audacity, have them synced up to each other, and make a more complete variation.

https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B18GQkZXWsEVZmxyUzNxS3J0QVk

I could've also easily done this with "EM20_rhythm_GZM_full (ボーナストラック)" instead, but just decided to choose this one, as it has a bit of a different beat than what you normally hear this melody with.

Shiro Sagisu really likes EM20 from Rebuild of Evangelion, doesn't he? He could have included a few variants of it on the Outtakes disc (like the full version of the one they used in Rebuild 2.0)

Makes me wonder if he's in an Evangelion composer mindset at the moment, which hopefully means we'll hear some news on that soon (the last Rebuild was supposed to have been completed by the end of last year, but it got delayed when Anno agreed to do Shin Godzilla)

I really like EM20 as well, "The Longest Day" variants are my favorite. I like their slower tempo which in turn makes them sound 'noble' and 'honorable', to myself, at least. I can see why he would like the composition so much and why it's used so often. :)

On the topic of the version I mentioned before (2EM13), there is a 'short' version on the first disc of the Evangelion 2.0 CD, but an earlier version at full length can be heard in the "Rebuild of Evangelion 2.02" feature on the DVD and Blu-Ray. I ripped it out when constructing my chronological Evangelion sets.

Ah, you mean "Sin from Genesis". That's a kickass version of the cue. The way in which the strings sound during the section of the track wherein there's just strings and percussion - I just love.

There's always a lot left, particularly if you consider that the film mixes of several tracks unavailable on the main OSTs tend to cut down or alter quite a bit. Just listen to the 2EM13 I posted and compare it to the 2EM13 in the film mix of Evangelion 2.0.

The only thing about The End of Evangelion that bothered me was the way they pronounced 'Eva'. They spoke it as you would with an 'e' instead of an 'a'. The latter being how it should be pronounced.

I don't get it, was it a miscommunication between the staff and voice actors?

It just occurred to me: End of Eva was done by a different distribution company.

In North America, ADV Films, the license holder and distributor for the Neon Genesis Evangelion TV series, declined to license The End of Evangelion and the associated films, with Manga Entertainment "reportedly [paying] around 2 million dollars" for the rights. Rei Ayanami's English voice actress Amanda Winn Lee wrote the film's script for its English subtitled and dubbed adaptations, and produced and directed the dub. The cast consisted of mostly voice actors reprising their roles from ADV's English adaptation of the TV series, with several supporting roles recast because the original actors were unavailable. To accommodate voice actors living in different parts of the country, the dub was recorded in three locations: Los Angeles, Houston and New York City.

While that might explain it, you'd think Lee and the other principal voice actors from before would've known better.

Trivia
The North American release of the soundtrack erroneously mislabels Main Title - Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II - Finale Part 4 as "Main Title - (From Invasion of the Astro Monster), Pt. 2", and in turn labels the previous track before it as "Pt. 1" rather than "Part 3", despite the theme of Pt. 2 being from Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II, and not Invasion of the Astro Monster.
Besides Decisive Battle from Evangelion being reused, Sagisu also redid tracks from his Bleach and Evangelion 3.0 OST for the film.
The track Famously is reused in the film, only using the first minute.
The track Black Angels is also a Bleach track called What Can You See In Their Eyes.
Unlike most composers, Sagisu uses English vocals throughout the score, to make it seem unsettling and ambient.

---------- Post added at 02:29 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:20 PM ----------

By the way, I was trying to identify the sources of some tracks of the Eva 2.0 and 3.0 scores. The track titles feature slates, which are helpful, but they're not enough.
Recently I found out from a JWfan thread that 3.0 uses three cues from Sagisu's "Nadia: The Secret of the Blue Water", and just yesterday I found out that the "KK" in many cues of Eva 2.0 indicates the cues that use material from his score for the "Kareshi Kanojyo" show.

I'm still trying to figure out the meaning of "YAMASHITA" in one of the 2.0 tracks, as well as the meaning of "SS" (which is also used in the Shin Godzilla OST, look at track 14), "SD2", "P" and a "E-03", all from 3.0.

Any help is most welcome! :D

ggctuk2005
04-25-2018, 04:46 PM
I'm not sure SS is referring to any previous work in particular here given both are adaptations of "Famously..." from Evangelion 3.0's soundtrack and that does not have the same initials or any indicator in the booklet as to any other potential origin. It could be that SS_103 is the original slate for "Famously...".

In this instance, I think the simplest deduction is SS simply stands for "Sagisu Shiro", perhaps indicating that he might have performed in those pieces. Alternatively, it could be referring to one of the "Shiro's Songbook" series, but everything I've heard in the ones I've listened to definitely doesn't fit.

I've done some work with the scans. I was told that the Google Translator app can translate images, so I installed it. Unfortunately, the Eva 3.0 releases don't feature any detailed notes for each cue as the Eva 2.0 did... but Shin Godzilla did have some, so I used Google Translator for the notes of track 14 "SS_103_GZM (Famously)".

I have to say that I cannot really 100% trust its translation... since it varied a bit. But I found interesting that at some points in that translation is mentioned "source sound". I'd add this possibility to "Shiro Sagisu" and "Shiro's Songbook".

There's always a lot left, particularly if you consider that the film mixes of several tracks unavailable on the main OSTs tend to cut down or alter quite a bit. Just listen to the 2EM13 I posted and compare it to the 2EM13 in the film mix of Evangelion 2.0.

Wait, so it's 100% sure that the "Original Soundtrack" releases feature the film mixes? Like, for all cues of all the releases? I did notice that the 3.0 feature the film mix of the "Beethoven / The Wrath of God" tracks, but I was wondering if all those releases were indeed the film mixes...

ggctuk2005
04-26-2018, 10:05 PM
Yeah, "Original Soundtrack" is the film mixes while the "Music From..." releases are the unaltered cues. The only exception to this is the special edition of Evangelion 2.0's soundtrack which features the "Music From..." release as its second disc (it was never released separately from what i can tell, much like the Evangelion 3.0 Original Soundtrack was only ever released with the Japanese blu-ray release of the film)

Imperivm
04-26-2018, 10:27 PM
Wow... Great!
I did indeed make a comparison of each and every cue (only those who were provided with slates, so I didn't count the songs and some of the "Music From..." of 3.0 Disc 2) of the 6 releases... Good to know those are the film mixes! :D

Actually, I did start those comparisons in order to make a combined set for each film... But it will take some time, I wouldn't know what to do with some things. Like, wheter to keep only the original version or also the film mixes, if I'd want to take film mixes tracks and restore them to the original lenth but with the film version insert (like The Wrath of God from 3.0) and so on.

Seems the pre-visual reel for Shin Godzilla has 'different' music, much like the Evangelion 2.02 pre-visual reel has earlier versions of Evangelion 2.0 cues. It has EM20_Jerry Full with the Evangelion timpani as opposed to the Shin Godzilla timpani, plus guitars in the same place as EM20 in Evangelion 1.0 (given this I'm going to assume it's actually from Evangelion 1.0). Will report back to see if it has any other alternates and I will rip it once I've done.

EDIT: Seems that it's largely EM20s. However, there is that one unreleased Evangelion 1.0 EM20 Jerry variant.

So, in order so far:

EM20_Jerry (Evangelion 1.0) - Unreleased.
EM20_rhythm_GZM_full (Shin Godzilla) This is the same one as the OST, with the following track mixed over the end of it.
EM20_Godzilla (Shin Godzilla) This is played twice.
EM20_CH_alterna01 (Shin Godzilla) This is played twice.
EM20_CH_alterna03 (Shin Godzilla)
EM20_CH_alterna04 (Shin Godzilla)
EM20_rhythm_GZM (Shin Godzilla)
Battle In Outer Space - News Spreads Worldwide
Godzilla/Angilas Depart from Godzilla: Monster Island, or the main title of Battle In Outer Space (same composition but different recordings)

Seems it's only worth ripping it for that EM20_JErry variant for Evangelion 1.0.
