**SPOILER**

It did'nt, it's an assumption made by many players because Squall called Ellone "Sis", and Ellone was the **ADOPTED** daughter of Laguna and Raine.

There are other clues scattered throughout the game, but I can't be bothered to dig them up to list them.

they just called Ellone sis, because she was the eldest and had a sister figure to her

Raine was carrying Laguna's baby and died during birth. The baby was sent to an orphanage. Laguna was out looking for Ellone.

Kiros says: "good thing you don't look like your father" or something like that.
Laguna also says that he and Squall had to have a talk after Ultimecia was dealt with.

It's only natural to assume he was Laguna's son.

She died during birth? I thought she drowned? At least that's what they explain in the old magazines in ...... (shit forgot the name of the town. It is where you can play cards against the owner in the bar to win Siren? card)

You know, we get this thread all the time. If anyone really wants to, they can just search through this section and you'll probably find like three or four threads talking about this. I'm half-tempted to just sticky this thread and be done.

For the record, here is the proof that Laguna is Squall's father:

1. Moombas recognize people by smelling their blood. When they find Squall in the Prison, they say "Laguna, Laguna."

2. Squall always takes Laguna's place in the flashbacks.

3. When you talk to Kiros and Ward in the airship, they say "You look a lot like your mother." "Kiros says it's a good thing you don't look like your father."

4. Their names all have to do with water --- Squall, Raine, Laguna.

5. Laguna and Raine got married.

You're mistaking the facts. The woman that drowned was the wife of the bar owner. That was his diary.

The town was Dollet.

I should also note that Squaresoft did confirm that Laguna was Squall's father... but that was on the old Squaresoft.com website which doesn't exist any more (Hello Playonline/Square-Enix!).

I wish I could just pull it out and go "stfu i win" right about now. :(

A friend and I had an argument about the age listings in the instruction booklet. She claimed that Laguna wasn't Squall father because of the ten year gap. I was like "Hello? That's DREAM WORLD Laguna!" But Square did confirm their relationship and there is really nothing else to argue about on the matter.... And by the way, she still doesn't believe me to this day........ :p

Some people are hard to convince, even when there's a load of proof. Unless, somewhere in the game, Squall and Laguna got a DNA test and it came back linking the two together, people are going to doubt that it's true.

Agent0042
02-26-2005, 01:02 AM
We don't know really know the origins of Leonhart though. I was always under the impression that Leonhart was a surname that he took on for himself and isn't necessarily related to anything else.

Yui
02-26-2005, 02:22 AM
okay... well... i was thinking, maybe squall has his last name leonhart, probably cuz he has a heart like... a... lion? and why would squall use raine's maiden name? didn't he say that he doesn't remember anything about his parents? then obviuosly, he can't know raine's maiden name...

UltimateFFFan
02-27-2005, 08:54 AM
Well, if Square wanted to use Raine's maiden name, that means that:

a) Squall is a b****** (in the correct sense of the word)
b) Square were promoting pre-marital sex
c) They were also saying that Laguna sleeps around, because he also like Julia, and knowing Laguna a lot of other women before Raine. (Taking Selphie's quote of "Sir Laguna is so cute!" into account, how can other women resist?!)

Oh dear Hyne forbid people have a sex life! Anyhow... Laguna only actually SPOKE to Julia... once? As far as we know, and due to the way he was acting in her hotel room, I'd bet that it WAS the first time he'd actually had the balls to speak to her. And since Julia and Raine are the only two women mentioned in ANY of the "dream world" sequences, how the hell can you claim Laguna "sleeps around"?! Just because Selphie thinks Laguna's cute, the first time you go to the dream world doesn't mean she'd sleep with him, and I doubt VERY much Laguna would sleep with her!

I don't think Sqaull was ever adopted. We only know for sure that Zell (and maybe Irvine??) were adopted for certain. Plus, I guess that Edea and Cid knew somewhat of Laguna's existance, so I'd doubt that they'd give Squall away, in case he turned up on their doorstep someday.

Yui
03-16-2005, 02:46 PM

Aerith Gainsborough
03-16-2005, 03:15 PM
Yeah, the whole thing seems a bit weird. I mean, they all know each other from the orphanage, then they got adopted by someone, then they came to one of the gardens.

The thing is, they were kinda old already when they got adopted, then their parents sent them to gardens only a few years later? It doesn't look well in my opinion.

Why couldn't they just drop the adoption thing? Why not just having kids from the orphanage brought to the garden?

The Anti-Existence
03-16-2005, 10:29 PM
It is so frickin' obvious that Laguna is Squall's father. Laguna with Julia introduced us to Julia who married General Caraway, and they had Rinoa. Laguna had Squall with Raine. The point is, love will find a way. Corny, but in the game it's true.

WyrmKing
03-17-2005, 10:05 PM
Maybe squall's last name is Leonhart cuz in the world of ff8 people uses the wife's last name instead of the husband's so squall had to be leonhart and the I make a quistion: Why rinoa is not Rinoa Caraway if that's her phather's last name? maybe Julia was Julia Heartily (or however u write rinoa's last name)

Siren's Song
03-17-2005, 11:00 PM
Rinoa loathes and despises her father, especially his connections with the Galbadian army. Add in the fact that she's part of a resistance group opposing Galbadia's occupation of Timber, and it's fairly logical that she wouldn't use her father's name.
No-one ever seems to know where Squall's surname comes from. The Kramers' must have come up with it at some point before he entered B. Garden, or maybe it was the surname of the family that adopted him...?

WyrmKing
03-18-2005, 04:46 AM

maybe squall named himself as lionheart since he has a heart like a lion... or maybe... ouuuu! i don't know!

03-24-2005, 02:06 AM
Ook I am not really sure but i am going with like-father-like-son. I am pretty sure of this but there are some things that do point the othere way for instance: They said that Squall calls Ellone "sis" because she was the oldest at Edea Kramers beach side orphanage. Also that all the other "kids" at the orphanage called Ellone sis also.
But then there is a buncha proof that Laguna is Sqaull's father: Kiros " You look just like your mother. Good thing you dont look like your father" Ward " .........." I mean that is a lot of proof! I think what Ward said was what convinced me!
Ooh yea go check out my little respect for Final Fantasy its on the page before this.
It is also a poll called " I have beaten all of them" by Jax

As for Laguna, everything about his backstory is shown via his flashbacks in the game, ableit out of order.

Laguna, Kiros and Ward were originally just regular Galbadian foot-soldiers fighting during the conflict with Esthar around 20 years before the game starts. At some point Laguna meets Julia(Rinoa's mother) in Galbadia and falls in love with her, but is forced to leave her to go fight in the war, along with Kiros and Ward. Julia marries General Caraway while Laguna is away and later dies in a car crash.

While fighting Esthar on the Centra Continent at the Lunatic Pandora excavation site, Laguna, Kiros, and Ward are severely wounded and leap from a cliff into the sea to escape. Ward loses his voice because of his injuries, and ends up back in Galbadia as a prison guard in their desert prison. Laguna ends up in Winhill, where he meets Raine and Ellone. Kiros ends up running into Laguna in Winhill and tells him about Ward. While in Winhill, Laguna falls in love with Raine, but while he is away from the village Esthar attacks and kidnaps Ellone. Laguna leaves the village to find Ellone, and while he is gone Raine gives birth to his son, Squall, but either dies giving birth or shortly after. With no parents around, Squall is sent to Edea's Orphanage.

The exact order of events at this point is unclear, but it is known that while looking for Ellone Laguna stayed with Kiros and met up with Ward again, found his way to the Shumi Village(actually thw way the game seems to tell this part makes it sound like he washed up at the Shumi village after escaping from Centra, but since he is looking for Ellone already it must be during this time period, not pre-Winhill), made a movie and wrote for Timber Maniacs to make money, and eventually found his way to Esthar. He was captured there and forced to work on the Lunatic Pandora project. He eventually rebels and escapes, and manages to find Ellone in Dr. Odine's lab and rescue her. His charisma and leadership qualities endear him the Esthar people, and he leads the rebellion against Sorceress Adel, managing to seal her away at Tear's Point and sending her into space using the Ragnarok spaceships. He is then made President of Esthar, and sends Ellone to Edea's Orphanage so she can be safe from harm. This is where Laguna's story ends, until he meets up with Squall again in the current time
