i was playign through ff9 the other day and i noticed this book on a shelf i couldnt damage it much and then it used paper storm to kill me dead whats the point of thsi book do you get anything special?

That's the secret boss Tantarian, it can be found twice in the game, both times in the Alexandrian Library, if you want a chance at it fight it during disc 3. There's really no purpose just another secret boss so you can see you beat everything, I don't remember getting anything special for beating him, but maybe I'm wrong, he's tough to beat but I recommend it. Use Amarants spare change and physical attacks and hopefully you will open it up, when it reveals a blue blob DO NOT use any physical attacks, only magic and skills since physical attakcs close him back up. Equip everyone with antibody. That's about what I remember.

Yeah I know, I was really disappointed when I defeated Tantarian.

final fantasy 9 it seems strange everything is usually rewardign with plenty of hidden treasure everywhere unlike most other ffs and lots of secrets it just seems liek such a waste what do you get in the way of exp and gp ap etc.

Yeah, this one is pretty tough. You got two chances to challenge him. I can never beat him the first time, so I wait until the second chance, because my party members are a bit stronger that time.

As far as I remember, you can steal some nice things and you get 'Hermesboots' (name in my game version) where you can learn the ability 'haste'.

Yeah, the running shoes are nice, Auto-Haste was my favorite ability.

auto abilities have always been amoung my favorites but i am positive u can get them not soon after anyways right now i have levels of 35 average and im at the lifa tree second tiem so im almost disc 3.

I believe the Silver Fork (through stealing) and the Running Shoes are pretty useful at that point in the game. Not so sure about the Demon's Mail.

And it's not that hard to beat him. The only character you might have a problem with using is Freya because since you last used her in the middle of Disk 2, her levels are low and she hasn't learned as many abilties. Other than her, if you have a good strategy, it shouldn't be that hard to beat him. I only had trouble with him on the first time I faced him, but since then, I can kill him quite easily.

Tantarian is pretty hard. People have given enough info here, but you can also steal the Demon's Mail off of him, but it is so hard to steal.
