I was wondering about the 1812 Overture, since it's been stuck in my head since a recent broadcast of V for Vendetta.
Lo and behold, it appears.
Gracias.

Wow, I had no idea there were 3 Flavors of FLAC, but here they be!

Thank you for the uploads, all 3 of them, and the fine cover scans. I can't wait to listen!

I had no idea there were 3 Flavors of FLAC...There's actually only one "flavor", to be somewhat technical about it. However, FLAC is more versatile than a lot of people realize. It can support up to 8 simultaneously playing channels (which fits perfectly with 7.1 Surround Sound, 7+1=8, obviously), as well as a full slate of tags/metadata. Most of the time, of course, FLAC files usually only have two channels, but as long as you stay within that 8-channel limit, you can do pretty much whatever you want with it far beyond merely standard stereo.

The trick (and this is where it might appear that there are different "flavors"), is for whatever media player you're using to know what to do with those channels. Any halfway decent player will obviously know what to do with the more common two-channel files, but when you start getting into Surround Sound, you need a media player that supports it. If you look at my Mahler Project uploads, you'll see where those SACDs were issued with only 5-channel surround sound ("5.0 Surround Sound"), with no independent LFE channel for the subwoofer. They're depending on the player to separate the bass frequencies from the mid & upper frequencies and to then route those bass frequencies to the subwoofer. An actual SACD player on a home theater surround system will have no problem with this, but some PC media players (such as WinAmp, the one I use) get confused because they don't recognize the non-standard Surround format and subsequently crash, with the result that I had to add a silent, "dummy" channel to all those uploads so that WinAmp (and hopefully other media players as well) are fooled into thinking it's standard 5.1 Surround Sound, and will now consequently recognize the Surround Sound format and handle it correctly. (And the Surround Sound card will subsequently route the bass frequencies to the subwoofer, just like a home theater system).

(Incidentally, this 1812 Overture SACD came with full-fledged 5.1 Surround Sound, as you can see in the OP's sound editor screenshot, so no "dummy" channels were needed.)

So if there are different "flavors" to FLAC it's all in how your preferred media player handles it. The actual FLAC file, however, is pretty straight forward. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/42753709/Photobucket/nod.gif

(And I sincerely hope it didn't seem like I was trying to "correct" you or talk down at you, Darth Sphincter, that is certainly not my intention whatsoever. I just thought/hope you might find this information interesting and, perhaps someday, useful. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/42753709/Photobucket/thumb.gif )

This has been re-upped AND REMASTERED and is available for download again.

When I first uploaded this last year, it was at 96 kHz for the SACD layer. Since then, I have learned that it is better to rip SACDs at 88.2 kHz, because that way the waveform is proportional to the original DSD signal, which results in smoother sound at the higher frequencies. I don't know if it will make an audible difference to anyone, but especially considering that it also makes for slightly smaller .flac files, I figured it would be a good move to make, regardless.

(The artwork/scans are exactly the same as before.)

(The links are in the OP now. Im not doing links via PM anymore. That absolutely wore me out.)

Happy listening. https://drive.google.com/uc?export=download&id=0B6U4A_vYuii5SHRvVkhuNHlRbFk
