Not my favorite recording but respectable, Handley is my hero here. Now i can select the best recordings of RVW. Anyway, great share, thank you. Btw... Slatkin conducts a wonder(power)ful recording of Walton's first Symphony on Virgin.

BobtheKnob, you are so many things musically... not just here (which is a thankful wonder) but in so very much of your life. And now? I'll probably call you Vaughan BobtheKnob. Why? When I was 13 I saw many remarkable (to me) BBC shows. What were these called? "Nine Symphonies by WHO??" The non-Beethoven "who" was of course Vaughan Williams. And who was the host, writer and even conductor? Andre Previn! (He was wonderful on the BBC... and even Stephen Sondheim has said their time together on BBC was one of his best conversations.) To me this was wonderful in my life... as well as the screening of Ken Russell's perhaps best film about the late life of Delius. Now... I only not just listened to but live with Slatkin's VWs when the wonderful Horacio posted these on his La Discoteca Clasica download site. To me his Vaughan Williams recordings are differently grateful. And, yes, Bohuslav my life is more than closely lived with EVERYTHING of Handley's music: his VW is my deeply human and creative life... I have lived with his works since I was 20. To me there is so much of VW's lost and solely heard on radio now resurrected by the more than great Vaughan Williams Society's CD label "Albion Records"... which is equaled by Lyrita's very recent release of Robinson's "Sir John in Love". Again, what you do (Slatkin also) make our lives and our living more than better... and entirely less than bitter! Thank you, bless you... and love you.

Thanks for the feedback (and for keeping the thread alive https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/42753709/Photobucket/thumb.gif )

(By the way, could you repeat all the compliments about me to my ex?? https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/42753709/Photobucket/biggrin1.gif )

Couldn't agree more. Slatkin is good in the 4th, 8th and 9th symphonies, okay for most of the rest, the 5th is really poor. Overall, the second weakest "single conductor" cycle next to the Andrew Davis/Teldec. Handley is never less than good in his RLPO cycle, though his earlier recording of the London Symphony with the LPO is better than his remake.

Again, there are now so many glorious RVW recordings to choose from, you can truly pick and choose for each symphony.

Like Shostakovich, Vaughan Williams is a composer I've been meaning to get acquainted with. Best recording/performance or not, this seems an appropriate compilation with which to wet my toes so to speak.

Thanks for the share!
