This entered my life as an LP from The Musical Heritage Society which eventually faded away. Durufle's Requiem was always popular but this recording was not only conducted by the composer and featured his wife as soloist but it featured his Messe "Cum Jubilo" that struck me as more of a standout piece. It certainly was much louder! It also contained a very sly transition from baritone to tenor (usually uncredited) that was cause for a little tingle along the spine. The recording also includes the Three Dances for orchestra that are lovely. I waited a long time for this recording to to appear on CD. Erato owned the rights and Erato finally issued it and since being absorbed by Warner Bros Music has issued it in one form or another... the only problem is: I remember the sound quality being MUCH finer on that LP.

The years have gone by and this music has been recorded many times. Yet nothing measured up to Durufle's own recording. You get to be the judge.

Leave a request for the Flac link here.

Thanks for the share, Phideas1. Even with poor sound, I would like to hear this. Most of the pieces are new to me but look fascinating. The personal touch of the composer (and his wife) interests me also. Thanks in advance for the link!

Hello Phideas1,

Your impeccable taste just couldn't miss such a brilliant (but not famous as he deserves... ) composer as Maurice Durufl !

No doubt that I will enjoy listening these works conducted by their creator !

Would you be kind enough to send me a link ? ;)

Many, many thanks in advance !!!

:) :) :)

I think all who enjoy this sort of thing, will enjoy this sort of thing. ;-)

Other than the irregular sound quality that my very picky ears have noticed, I also have to mention that this version conducted by the composer has more life and energy... other versions seem to plod along... just another case of of musicians who FEEL the music deeply and musicians who just PLAY THE NOTES.

There will always be paint by the numbers performances and performances that love every nuance.

I performed the Requiem in college. But that's the only Durufle that I have heard. So I would very much appreciate links to other works. Thanks!
