Are you familiar with Schrecker's Chamber Symphony? He does more with 23 players than some of his contemporaries could manage with 100.

Yet another massively neglected genius...

The shadow of Richard Strauss falls long and dark. But everyone should listen to the Introduction to Der Ferne Klang at least once. Schreker would have been a marvellous film composer.

Echoes of Wagner and foreshadowing of Max Steiner.

Gutten Tag, Dear Phideas1,

Even though not being familiar with Franz Schreker's works, the composer's name rings my bell...

The way you expose the life and art of this austrian musician definitely provokes an urgent need to discover it !

I just had a look at photos taken from him and you can perfectly imagine the intensity of his creation, the suffering in his existence...

Thank you once more, dear Phideas1, for giving us the opportunity to explore these orchestral "werke" !!!

Best regards.

Schreker was at his best in opera…

Which is only ever how I've listened to him. It was his favoured creative outlet. He also wrote his own librettos.

"For listeners to whom writers Schnitzler and Hofmannsthal, painters Klimt and Schiele, and composers Schreker and Zemlinsky mean nothing; the work of Franz Schreker will mean nothing. But for listeners to whom these writers and painters and composers conjure images of youthful decadence, aesthetic violence, sensual opulence, and ecstatic despair, this music will be just the thing to top off a night of debauched delights."

I did already have these (physically) but I think you sent me the link anyway because I'd posted in the thread - so thank you anyway! You have re-ignited my love of Schreker and my search for more of his music has led me to others - I am particularly enjoying Karol Rathaus, who was a pupil of Schreker.
