Sadly because of where I live I can only get dial up. I would like to play FFXI but I dont know if I can, I have a new graphics card but is it possible for me to play it with dial up?

It is, however you might experience high ping at times and updates will take a hell of a lot longer to download.

High Ping? Is that the same as lag?

Ska

yep

As I understand it, FFXI actually caps your connection speed while you play, so you'd ping about the same as everyone else. Updates would be slower, but it shouldn't make a big difference otherwise. That is, unless there's a problem with your phone lines, modem, or ISP. If any of those are problematic, it could make your conneection unstable and cause fluctuations in your ping.

It is very possible to play FFXI on dial up, the only real things you will experience that is different is the patch downloads. Otherwise, you're good to go compared to many others out there.

I can testify. I played on a 56k for about 2 weeks, waiting for my DSL modem to arrive. Besides for updating, I saw no difference WHATSOEVER.

I play counter strike source, just thought it would be the same

MogKnight

Counter Strike: Source passes a lot more packets of data compared to Final Fantasy XI. Playing on Dial Up is a disadvantage on that that it really can only be used for casual play.

Speaking as someone who plays FFXI on dial-up, in my experience it isn't too bad actually, although there are times where you get quite a bit of lag (I found particularly when I first leave my Mog House the game really lags, but soon settles down, although it can still be laggy if there are a lot of PCs around (the Auction House is pretty notorious for this).

Other than that, there isn't too much of a problem playing FFXI on dial-up. It's just all those updates you have to do which is the absolute monster (for instance it took me the better part of a week to finish downloading all of it, although I took my time, as you can break it up over several sessions, which is handy for those on ISPs who have the tendancy to disconnect them from the net at inopportune moments), of which broadband really comes into it's own at that time. I guess your ISP also ahs a lot do with it too, as some are faster than others.

Dial Up is not that bad..I have it. The first Update thing took a hell of a long time to finish. I experience lag in places where theres MANY people(Jeuno) and i get the occasional dissconnection. Now, i may scream, rant and rave at those broadbanders, but its really not all that bad.

Use Internet service from your cable company. That's a bit better than using dial-up.

Vix

Or you can always resort to getting a Sattelite Internet service (I think).

Alpott
02-25-2005, 02:44 PM
Sattelite is really slow, I have heard.

Also, If you're using Dial Up, good look on this new version update, there will be more to come!

so is there single player becuase i am thinking of buying it

because you know me and my brother might go 50-50 so can you play single player until you get the internet hook-up or is it internet hook up only

Alpott

It is an Online Game Only so the chances of getting Single Player is quite slim =/

Fatal dream, why don't you just go to Square's official website and read up on Final Fantasy XI?

Unless they've removed it FFXI actually has a 56k cap last I knew... Most dial up modems do not connect at 56k though so broadband would still be the best bet, except for the updates and whatnot which have no cap. They did this because at the time of release the PS2 could only connect with 56k modems. So the game is pretty dial up friendly.

Since when did the PS2 use a dial-up modem?

The Ethernet Adaptor released here in NA is both a 56k modem and a network card. I don't know how it is in Japan though.

It's an exact copy of the North American version.

If the Network Adaptor in JPN is an exact copy of the US...

... Then why are there External Hard Drives?

Call me technologically stupid but I've had FFXI for about a year for my PS2 and I finally tried to put the HDD in and Ethernet Adaptor and the stupid icon doesn't even come up on my browser.I've installed it 2 times already and it does the same thing. And plus I was wondering if I could hook a phone line in and play some how on FFXI,does the isp automatically charge you for doing that?Somebody please help me....remember I'm the stupid person over here!

MogKnight

Why buy a video game if you don't intend to play because you supposedly "have a life" ?

Oh, wait...

Guess that answers my question. Amen.

lol Yeah, kind of. ^^

But I'll still answer your question.

FFXI came pre-installed on your HDD. All you had to do is run the PlayOnline disc once to finish the installation, then register your codes.

Second, it's not your ISP that charges you for paying the game. It's PlayOnline. You need an ISP to play the game, as it is an Online game, but you won't get extra Internet fees because of it.

Well thanks for answering the stupid person-with-a-life's question lol
Guess I won't be trying that line anymore and post something to set myself up :D
