"Bury the dead. They stink up the joint. As for the rest of Coughlin's Laws, ignore them.
The guy was always full of shit. But I guess you knew that already."

"Excuse me, do I have "fuck me" written on my forehead?"

"The luck is gone, the brain is shot, but the liquor we still got."

THE MOVIE

Brian Flanagan (Tom Cruise) Martini shakers and ice cubes as the materialistic Brian Flanagan, a bartender who drops out of school to search for the perfect "rich chick" who will bankroll him into luxury. Brian meets up with bar veteran Doug Couglin (Bryan Brown) and they put together a dance-duo bar-tending act, taking five minutes to a mix a drink as they dance and toss gin bottles behind the bar to cutting-edge rock music circa 1988.

The patrons, instead of demanding the booze, are dazzled by their antics and cheer them on. As a result, the bartenders become wildly popular -- in particular, Brian, who finds the bar babes falling all over each other to hop into the sack with him. As a result of their bar-tending success, they get hired to tend bar at a swanky disco, However, the friendship/partnership breaks up due to a bet over Flanagan’s girlfriend (Gina Gershon), and Brian takes off for Jamaica. There he meets vacationing New York City waitress Jordan Mooney (Elisabeth Shue) and the two fall in love.

But then Brian meets rich New York fashion executive Bonnie (Lisa Banes) who wants to take Brian back to Manhattan with her to become her drink-mixing stud. When Jordan sees this, the love affair is put on hold. But not for long, as pangs of consciousness begin to filter through Brian's drunken haze.

THE SOUNDTRACK

An eclectic mix of new and old make this a classic soundtrack, opening with Starship's "Wild Again", "GA Satellites" bar anthem "Hippy Hippy Shake" and Bobby McFerrin's smooth classic "Don't Worry, Be Happy".
Ry Cooder does a cover of "All Shook Up" ; Little Richard plays the old time rock n' roll hit "Tutti Frutti" and Robert Palmer rocks us with "Addicted To Love".

Jimmy Cliff plays the classic Jamaican love song "Shelter Of Your Love"; and let's not forget the gem of this album, the Beach Boys #1 smash "Kokomo".
Closing out the set is the Everly Brothers' "When Will I Be Loved" and Preston Smith's "Oh, I Love You So".

The film features an original music score composed by J. Peter Robinson.
It is dark and moody, accented by violins and a whinning electric guitar
heard on a number of tracks. On the lighter side, a piano version of "Shelter Of Your Love" provides us with a continuing motif througout the film.

As in any vocal removal soundtrack, a number of artifacts always seem to seep through.
The original mix for this film was a real mess; it had the center dialogue phase shifted 60 degrees, while the first syllable of every sentence by Tom Cruise and Laurence Luckinbill was volume boosted. In addition, various frequencies were removed from one microphone, making vocal removal a real challange.

In the end, I think you'll find most of this album listenable.
Enjoy!

TRIVIA

Did you know that the feature song 'Kokomo' from the Beach Boys, is actually about a real place.
As the song says, "off the Florida Keys, there's a place called Kokomo", it is a bar in a resort called "The Holiday Isle" in Isla Morada.

The term for Brian Flanagan (Tom Cruise) and Doug Coughlin (Bryan Brown)s' acrobatic bartending skills is "flair bartending". John Bandy, a flair bartender, trained Tom Cruise for the film.

Originally all the bottle tossing that was done in the film, was not scripted but in fact done last minute because the actors wanted to 'feel like real bartenders'" according to the The '80s Movies Rewind website.

The movie was nominated for 4 Golden Raspberry Awards including Tom Cruise for Worst Actor and Roger Donaldson for Worst Director. The film in the end won two Razzies, for Worst Picture and for Worst Screenplay.

The movie's Original Motion Picture Soundtrack album went to the No. #1 spot on the Canadian Albums Chart and the Australian Albums Chart; the No. #2 rank on the US Billboard Top 200 Chart and the New Zealand Album Charts;
the No. #3 spot Swiss, Austrian, and Swedish Album Charts, and peaked at the No. #4 rank on the German Albums Chart.

The names of various night-spots, cocktail bars, and hospitality venues featured in the movie are:
"Jerry's", "Cell Block", "Hysteria", "Kats Place", and "Flanagan's" and/or
"Cocktails and Dreams" aka "Flanagan's Cocktails & Dreams".

Only about 24 minutes of the movie's standard 104 minute running time is actually set in the exotic Carribean vacation location of Jamaica for which the picture is famous, particularly from the film's popular "Kokomo" song track music-video tie-in by The Beach Boys.
Approximately, 80 minutes of the movie is set in New York's Upper East Side of Manhattan, with only about a quarter of the picture actually set in the Jamaican holiday locale.

Sometimes films will use songs as source cues, only to bury them in the background or dial them almost completely out. Or maybe IMDB is mistaken, so maybe that's why you can't find it.

Wow! With the center channel offset, that must have made isolating and removing the vocals tricky! Thanks for all the interesting work.

This is amazing!

I owned the little retail version years ago, but it was stolen from my desk at my place of employment. They took the cd & left the case!

This is about a zillion times better & a lot more fun. Thanks for your time & effort! I can't even imagine...

I love the artwork with the songs also!

Please re-up! It's so upsetting how J. Peter Robinson never seemed to release any score work from his films so i appreciate people trying and getting the best results possible. I'm impressed with your collection! Curious if you have the "Flashdance" score by Giorgio Moroder & Sylvester Levay! I'm shocked at how a score release never happened for that film when there's clearly some score work put into the film.
