One of Goldenthal's finest work.
It helps if you don't view it as a conventional Final Fantasy story.
Sure, it shares something you might see in a snippet of the games.
But it only carries over some names and no real substance from the existing franchise.

No chocobos, no summons, no mogs.
No materia either.

But as an American production, it's just a movie that did well without any reference whatsoever to anything pre-existing.
You can go on record saying it's just a movie on its own, as such it did good and the score is excellent.

A lot of Goldenthal's signature throaty bass.

I met the producer of the film, while in production, and asked him who would compose the score. When he mentioned Goldenthal, I told him what a good idee it was! He was surprised someone knew him and, I think, reassured with my enthousiasm! I bought the score but would love to have this recording session! Thanks in advance.

It's possible that said music may not have been composed by Goldenthal or that it was added last minute after the archive of sessions had been created. I've seen it happen before, so it's not impossible. Just one guess.
