My favorite guitar player is a toss up between Brian May, Jimmy Paige and Kirk Hammett. I know these are probably not the most original of choices, but I like their music and between the three I hear a bit of everything. It works.

Interesting tidbit, Hammett took guitar lessons from Joe Satriani.

Buckethead is one of the fastest players in the world, but I still don't rate him very highly as he shows barely any emotion. My fave would be Jonny Greenwood from Radiohead, hes a pretty awesome guitarist, but never really lightning fast, but the effects and such that he uses on songs to give them more layers, rates him higher than most speed guitarists in my book.

J Mascis, man this guy is fucking awesome, he has some awesome riffs, he shows emotion, and my god is he fast, easily up there with the most highly ranked guitarists.

Also like TK said, Johnny Ramone, he could play for shit, power-chords...not exactly the hardest thing in the world, but he played so hard and strummed so hard and carried on going like a mad motherfucker, that he was just awesome. RIP Johnny Ramone

Very true, his picking work is brilliant, and without that The Beatles wouldn't have created songs like 'Blackbird.' Talking about The Beatles, George Harrison was brillaint guitarist, I mean very few can have a sitar in their hands and after a couple of hours have learnt so much on it. RIP George Harrison.

Well, considering Dave Mustaine co-wrote Call of Ktulu, I don't see a problem there. Hell, you can hardly blame the guy for recycling a lot of the material he wrote for Metallica, especially after they ignored his request that it not be used.

Olde

Yeah, he had the right to use his own stuff. For example, Megadeth's Mechanix is almost completely identical to Metallica's The Four Horsemen. In fact, until Mustaine left, Hetfield sang Mechanix's lyrics, only to change them to make the song "original".

I also found something interesting; a video clip of the song No Boundaries by Michael Angelo, the supposed fastest guitarist in the world. You should check it out, b/c he's unbelievable, especially when the pace speeds up. I got it here (http://www.angelo.com/html/mp3___video.html), and it's the first item to download, off of his DVD Speed Lives. It's really incredible.

Best in the world is more a question of which guitar player plays/writes one's favoUrite leads and riffs. It's impossible to tell who has the best skill, for there are too many different styles. Dragonforce, while I admire their skill and everything, well, I just find them too fucking annoying to sit down and listen to. Great guitar players don't always write good music.
