I haven’t been able to find this anywhere on the Internet, so I’m assuming it’s quite rare. Quality is pretty good for a 1942 recording - bright and not muffled. I’m guessing it’s from an acetate source, so it’s not perfect, but I’ve heard much worse. I’m offering FLAC only because some of the tracks play without a gap, and all mp3s add a split second of silence at the start so the gapless effect is ruined.

1. Main Title (1:16)
2. The Storyteller (2:40)
3. Kamar, Condemned Traitor (4:35)
4. Ahmad's Stooges (2:47)
5. Let's Pack Our Bags And Get Out Of Bagdad! (0:47)
6. "Death" Of The Caliph (2:11)
7. Ministrations (4:39)
8. Sold Into Slavery (4:34)
9. Slave Market (6:29)
10. Revolt In The Slave Market (1:42)
11. Breaking Their Bonds (2:41)
12. Trek To Kamar's Oasis Retreat (3:42)
13. Ali And The Poolside Harem (4:09)
14. Nadan's Bargain (6:59)
15. No Cobra, But Whatta Dance! (3:46)
16. Battle For The Throne (4:11)
17. End Cast (0:30)

Wow, 18 nominees for best score ...not counting the 8 nominees for best scoring of a musical picture - which in that year included 2nd nominations for Alfred Newman and Leigh Harline (who would have felt disappointed with only one nomination in light of Roy Webb's double and Victor Young's triple(!) nominations :) ).

Thank you, dear Wildwood, for this information. I knew that they sometimes had more than five nominees in certain categories (and used to have 8 to 10 best picture nominees - as they have again in recent years). But 18 was a number that surprised me so much that I had to look it up for myself (not that I don't trust you, which I really do). In the year before - when Bernard Herrmann won his only(!) Oscar for "The Devil and Daniel Webster" (aka "All That Money Can Buy") there were even 20 nominees for best score (his "Citizen Kane" among them ...if they nominate 20 films they could have at least given Herrmann two Oscars - I mean, how do you not give an Oscar for that score??).

It's amazing how many familiar scores there are among the nominations from that time which have been released in the last 15 years and yet quite a few from films and composers I have never heard of.

Which brings me to a question: why does this score seem to never have been released (okay, many great and interesting scores from that time still have not been) and more so why does the SoundtrackCollector-database seem not even to have an entry for this title? (I mean, it's a rather well known and available film). I looked it up when I saw the original post and could not find anything (maybe I just didn't see it).

Many thanks to feedthecats for the post. I look forward to hearing it.

It's available as a CD from BYU through the Harold Lee Library to be checked out I would imagine that was the source of this recording more than likely taking from the original 1943 acetate.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

Sadsack has posted a new lossless version of this score here (Thread 205721).

He and I were talking about his new source for this release a couple of weeks ago, and we compared it with mine. I had never performed a frequency test on my version, figuring it was from the best available source for such a rare recording. But when I analysed it in Audacity I discovered the frequencies cut off before 2000Hz, the tell-tale sign of mp3 compression. So my FLAC version is not truly lossless, whereas sadsack’s new version is. Will you hear any significant audio difference? Only your ears can be the judge. Personally, I'm very happy to have his upgrade.
