I couldn't find this Sony release anywhere on the forum and really wanted to get hold of 'Slaughter On 10th Avenue'.

After a bit of searching I found a reasonably priced used copy on Amazon.

Here's the whole album in FLAC :)

Does anyone know if there are any other releases of 'Slaughter' with better sound quality - perhaps on an MGM compilation? I haven't found anything so far.

I own the "Slaughter on Tenth Avenue" ballet on a analog track from the MGM laserdiscs boxset "MGM Composers Collection" and a very rare outtake (Gene Kelly & Vera-Ellen) : Falling in love with love/You took advantage of me.

I am not sure about the quality, I 'll see what I can do, transferring the songs from a laserdisc is not an easy thing :)

The complete pre-recordings I own:

Manhattan - Mickey Rooney
Blue Room - Perry Como
You're Nearer - Perry Como
Lover - Perry Como
My Heart Stood Still - Perry Como
Way Out West - Betty Garrett
It Never Entered My Mind - Betty Garrett
On Your Toes (extended version)
I Feel at Home With you - Pete Roberts and his Orchestra
Mountain Greenery - Perry Como
With a Song in My Heart - Perry Como
The Lady is a Tramp (extended version) - Lena Horne.
Where or When - Lena Horne
Thou Swell - June Allysson
Slaughter on Tenth Avenue - MGM Orchestra
I Wish I were in Love again - Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney
Blue Moon - Mel Torme
Falling in Love with Love/You Took advantage of Me (Gene Kelly & Vera-Ellen) - outtake
My Funny Valentine - Betty Garrett
With a Song in My Heart - Bill Lee
I Feel at Home With You
There's a Small Hotel - Betty Garrett
Spring is Here

All the tracks without SFX.

Thanks for your kind offer Daniel :) If you get time for the 10th Avenue Ballet and the Gene Kelly/Vera Ellen track, then that would be great.

I've got a soft spot for these old Sony MGM releases but this is one occasion where better sound quality would really help.

Cheers!

I was told by sound technician colleagues at Turner in the 1990s that the optical stem pre-recordings for Words and Music are presumed lost and even the laserdisc set which featured some pre-recordings used acetate playback discs as a source. The surviving elements were deemed as not adequate sound wise for an expanded release of this sound track as only the MGM soundtrack album survives in a decent source format. Unfortunately, Rhino seem to have abandoned their expanded releases of MGM musical soundtracks in 2004 except for the occasional compilation. I did my own expanded remastering of the complete sound track for MGM's WORDS AND MUSIC several years ago. I believe this is the most complete version of this sound track ever compiled as it was mastered from a tape of acetate playback discs from the collection of Lennie Hayton, the film's music director and even includes several outtake numbers. Slaughter on Tenth Avenue Ballet is uncut and some of the songs featured on the MGM album are in more complete versions. Hopefully this version will be adequate for your needs. The sound is variable and in some cases bordering on atrocious but definitely listenable. I am almost embarrassed to offer this file since it is impossible for me to make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear soundwise with the elements at my disposal but musically the tracks are superb and worthy of a listen. Please don’t expect any sonic miracles though. Below is a link to a file of my remastering of Words and Music in FLAC format and includes artwork. Unless the original optical stems are found or a tape copy surfaces from a better source this is unfortunately about as good as it gets with the complete WORDS and MUSIC soundtrack. Please confine this file to your own personal use.

Hi Stevie, thank you so much for your informative response! It's also very kind of you to share your own private version of the 'Words & Music' soundtrack :)

Hopefully in the future another label will pick up the baton from Rhino and look to release expanded releases of Golden Era Hollywood Soundtracks. Fingers crossed!

I'm looking forward to hearing your upload very much.

Best regards

Russell

You know, I have this Sony release. I got it waaaaay back in 1995 or 1996. This series of CDs put out by CBS/Sony was the first Collection of CDs I collected. I still have them all, too.

Funny thing is, I had to resort to phone calls and phone books to find Words and Music. It is still, to this day, the toughest CD I ever had to track down.

I live in Southern California and finally had tracked down a copy at the Tower Records on Paradise and Flamingo (now long gone) in Las Vegas, NV. I was actually prepared to drive up to Vegas to get this CD. Luckily for me, a family friend had a friend in Vegas, and was able to get him to go get it, buy it, and send it my way. Funny how you remember how you got your mitts on something more than the item itself;-)

So you can imagine the chuckle I got, when I saw this posting today;-)

Hi Judy,

I'd like to hear that Decca version of 'Slaughter On 10th Avenue' if it's easy for you to upload?

Thanks :)

Here is a link to the SLAUGHTER ON 10th AVENUE 1957 soundtrack. DLCD-8657 is my remaster of the Universal film score which Herschel Burke Gilbert expanded from Richard Rodgers original ballet music. If you have never heard it is a great 40 minute listen. If you want to read how this album came about here is a link to the post:

It has been reported to me that Track 16 It Never Entered My Mind is missing on my initial post of the expanded Words and Music soundtrack. I apologise for that oversight.
I have re-upped the corrected file and the new link on the initial post now includes the missing track.
Here is a link to the missing track for those who have uploaded the original post file: https://mega.nz/#!iwkjFBKS!m86Y3TwAvTXAv75Jl5-FVyW1DRoj99XrAq1QgjE8jlw

There have been other re-recordings of Slaughter, including one by Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops and another of the complete play (On your toes - IIRC) by Jay Records.

I, too, back in the day collected all these soundtracks and it wasn't until a month ago on another board that I was even aware of the existence of a WORDS & MUSIC soundtrack! Luckily I found it for a couple of dollars on Amazon and just purchased it so it amused me to see it on here! Thanks sensei_russ!

And thanks, Stevie, for one or two tracks that I have never owned before. Wondered why Rhino never released this or TILL THE CLOUDS ROLL BY. But surely that isn't Dinah Shore on Track 8 of "Spring is Here", is it? Was this on the laserdisc? I'm not where I can check this.
