William Hill-Bowen (1916-1964) was a British composer of light classical works (Paris Metro, Paris Promenade, The Girl from Cuba) who was even more renowned as an arranger-orchestrator and conductor. He arranged and orchestrated many of George Melachrino’s albums and also made recordings with his own William Hill-Bowen Orchestra, which was called simply Hill Bowen and his Orchestra on many US Camden and Reader’s Digest LPs. Bowen is the arranger-conductor on one of the greatest instrumental albums of show music ever, the 1963 RCA Camden (CAS-790) “Living Strings” release, NEW FROM BROADWAY, which included brilliant arrangements of four songs each from then new Broadway musicals, "Here's Love" (Meredith Willson’s musical adaptation of the 1947 film, ‘Miracle on 34th Street’) & "110 in the Shade" (Harvey Schmidt & Tom Jones’ musical version of ‘The Rainmaker’) plus one of the few (perhaps the only) commercial recordings ever of music from Rick Besoyan's delightful operetta parody, "The Student Gypsy or The Prince of Liederkranz". This album is also coveted by audiophiles for its dynamic, spectacular Dynagroove “LIVING STEREO” sound. NEW FROM BROADWAY is one of the few “Living Strings” albums RCA released in the 71/2 ips reel to reel stereo tape format and I remastered mine to CD several years ago and it is a wonderful recording that I listen to quite often both for its musical content and great 1960's typically RCA hot sound. Bowen’s lovely arrangement of “Is it Really Me” from 110 in the Shade is particularly nice. To expand the album further to CD length I added a track from Bowen’s 1963 RCA Custom Broadway Overtures recording of the original Prelude from “110 in the Shade” plus three Bonus Tracks of Bowen’s Living Strings arrangements of 3 tunes from Meredith Willson’s “The Music Man”. I hope you find NEW FROM BROADWAY as enjoyable a listen as I do.
