THE MOVIE

For everyone who's ever been deeply in Love or deeply in debt.
Young lovers Walter (Tom Hanks) and Anna (Shelley Long) are house-sitting the New York City apartment owned by Max (Alexander Godunov), Anna's ex-husband, who suddenly decides to toss them out. Needing a new home, they settle
on buying a country estate outside the city, which is available for a suspiciously low price.

It soon becomes apparent why, as doors fall off their hinges, staircases come tumbling down and a bathtub falls through the floor. The couple's relationship suffers similarly.

THE SOUNDTRACK

This is the (mostly) complete soundtrack to the 1986 film "The Money Pit" starring Tom Hanks, Shelley Long and Alexander Godunov.
Consisting of classical pieces such as Haydn's "Surprise" symphony, "Badinerie" by Johann Sebastian Bach, "Gavotte" by Christopher Parkening and the opera "The Wedding Contract" (from Lucia Di Lammermor) sung by Gaetano Donizetti, Dame Joan Sutherland.

A few Pop songs also decorate the soundtrack such as "I've Gotta Be Me" by Sammy Davis Jr., "Rush Rush" by Debbie Harry, and "La Bamba" by Ritchie Valens. Rounding out the list is Stephen Bishop's title track "The Heart Is So Willing".

Why is it "mostly" complete you may ask?
During the scene where the house is being repaired, some songs are played on the radio in the background (it almost sounds like someone tuning through the channels).
In this sequence, a number of tunes have yet to be indentified (see my track list below).
I've included track #47 "Misc Radio Music" complete with dialogue.
If anyone can identify these mystery tunes, please let me know.

On one of the Pop songs "Sittin' On A Dream" written by Michael Colombier and sung by Kathleen Wakefield, I was unable to completely clean out the Fx; consequently a few booms and bangs still remain.

The score was composed by Michel Colombier with the assistance of Kathleen Wakefield.
An underly theme of "The Heart Is So Willing" can be heard all through the film, leading to the grand finale "Ode To Joy" from Ludwig von Beethoven's 9th symphony.

Although not perfect, I think you will find this soundtrack worth listening to.
Enjoy!

TRIVIA

The movie was filmed during April, May, June and July 1985.

The film's title in Germany was "Geschenkt ist noch zu teuer" ("The Gift is Still Too Expensive").

For the scene with the bathtub falling two floors down after being filled with water, Tom Hanks does a obnoxious laugh. This clip of him laughing is commonly used for the Universal back-lot tour when the tour guides joke with the visitors.

The real life address of the house seen in the movie is, according to the 'Between Naps on the Porch' website, "199 Feeks Lane, Locust Valley, New York and was owned by the Ridder family at the time of the filming".

Co-owner of the house, Mrs. Ridder, was apparently absolutely shocked to see her home being semi-demolished. Reportedly, director Richard Benjamin persuaded her to appear in the movie's closing scenes after the house had been fully restored by the production.

The size of the property that the house was situated on was nine acres.

The amount of money that the Fieldings bought the house for was US $200,000.

The start of principal photography on this picture was delayed due to Shelley Long's pregnancy. After Long's daughter Juliana was born, Long began work which included all the physical stunts and acting that was required.

The key location issue during development and pre-production that faced producers Frank Marshall and Kathleen Kennedy was to find a real life gigantic mansion that its owners would consent to allow to be partially demolished.

A replica frontage of the "Money Pit House" was built at the back of the dwelling so when viewers see the front of the house, in reality, it is a set construction tacked onto the back of the building.

The "Money Pit" house, owned by the Ridder family in real life, was on the market to be sold when the movie was shooting.

The classic car seen in the movie was an off-white 1929-30 Lincoln Model L series 4-door Sport Phaeton automobile. In the film's story, the vintage vehicle came with the purchase of the house. During breaks in filming, star Tom Hanks liked to drive around in the vintage Lincoln Model L Series classic car.

The Shirk brothers names are appropriately titled because their name derives from the word "shirk" which means to avoid or evade which they do throughout the movie and they never appear again.

Apparently, real Hells Angels bikers from a real Hells Angels chapter portrayed the Hells Angels bikers in the movie.

Michael Jeter played a small role as one of the construction workers. Both he and Tom Hanks would later star together again in the movie adaptation of Stephen King's "The Green Mile".

The scene with the airborne turkey was rehearsed with an American football.

The picture, a remake, was made and released about 38 years after it's source film, Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House (1948).

The make and model of Art Shirk (Joe Mantegna)'s red sports car was a 1984 Chevrolet Corvette [C4]. It's customized license plate read "AS-1".

The band White Lion performs twice in this movie with a line-up that was pre their debut album. The bass player joined Black Sabbath between this movie and White Lion's first album.

According to website Wikimapia, The Money Pit House once had a real life name which was "Northway House". The site states that the house was "built for H.W. Warner in 1906. Federal in style. Called Northway House when William McNair owned the place.

Tom Hanks also made a movie with Jackie Gleason ( his last ) later that year after the Money Pit , and where his character Walter had a terrible fight with his wife Anna , Walter hits the staircase with his hand and goes Bang Zoom" and flies his fist to the sky ( or the Moon ) just like Ralph Krandon would do in The Honeymooners' .

The nickname of Max Beissart (Alexander Godunov) was "The Maestro".

Alexander Godunov was in the movie Die Hard, as was Rick Ducommon. Rick played Walt, most likely short for Walter. Tom Hanks plays a character named Walter in this movie, in The 'Burbs Tom Hanks character is concerned about a missing
neighbor named Walter. Rick Ducommon also played a neighbor. Both The Money Pit and The 'Burbs are movies involving houses. The Money Pit, The 'Burbs and Die Hard all have characters who fall off something.

As seen in the stair fixing scene, Tom Hanks can fit nearly his entire fist in his mouth.

The title card seen at both the beginning and towards the end of the movie read "Rio de Janeiro".

The closing credits had a special section called "The Construction Crew" for a number of the actors who played tradesmen in the film but had no character name billing.

The real life address of the mansion (the father was buying) seen at the end of the movie, known as the Villa Vlzcaya, is 3251 South Miami Avenue, Coconut Grove, South of Miami, Florida.

This needs to be reupped. I'm curious, was a score ever released for this film? If not than this is definitely an awesome find. I would love to get my hands on the Tom Hanks "bachelor party" (1984) complete score. That to me is the ultimate score find. It shocks me how hard to find the score to that film is considering it is one of Hanks' earliest & finest movies. Hopefully one day someone finds it. Thanks in advance.

I remember seeing a promotional copy on vinyl in the 80's in a 99cent store.
On it was a pristene copy of Kathleen Wakefeld's "Sittin' On A Dream".
I kick myself for not buying it!
