Is he still high profile enough that an accident won't happen, I wonder?

It's Julian Assange. A UN panel ruled that he is being "detained" at an embassy because he's afraid if he walks out he'll be delivered to the US.

I guess it's a "glimmer" but it doesn't really mean much. The panel doesn't have any legal authority to do anything, they're just expressing an opinion. Sweden is going to sit around and wait forever to try him as soon as he puts his foot out the door.

First they'd have to prove he's actually guilty of something.

What is he accused of? Why do people want to get a piece of him?

No they don't. Sweden wants to question him in regards to accusations of sexual assault. He has not been convicted of anything but they want to investigate the allegations.

He's not afraid of answering their questions, but he's afraid that if he goes into Swedish custody, Sweden will hand him over the US to answer their allegations after getting done with their own investigation. The US would undoubtedly pounce on the chance to try to get him. Whether Sweden would hand him over, who can say. But it's certainly understandable he'd be afraid of that, especially after what happened to Bradley Manning.

He is the founder of Wikileaks. The US will want to try him for international espionage, or something like that. What he is is a whistle blower, and we have amply demonstrated that what we do to whistle blowers is strip them of their human rights, torture them and destroy their lives.

You typed "try". And, of course, they can't try him if he hasn't been charged with anything. But you are correct about the rest. However, Sweden shares an extradition treaty with the USA, and probably wouldn't hesitate to hand him off to the Americans for a few krona.

Haha, yeah. I don't know what I was thinking. That would be the first time the United States government has ever tried someone behind closed doors without publicly charging them.

I was, of course, referring to the Swedish prosecutor. The US gov't, on the other hand, has had the indictment prepped and a private cell awaiting him for over 3 years.

I used the word "tried" in regards to the US government.

The Swedish government, to my knowledge, hasn't said they want to try him, they've said they want to question him about the sexual assault allegations. You can take someone into custody to question them without trying them in court.

Thanks for the info, HeadphonesGirl. I had no idea this was happening, and to be honest I had forgotten about WikiLeaks until now.
