Hercules: Custom Edition (2014/2016)
Composer: Fernando Velzquez
Source: Hercules FYC (Thread 182540)
Format: ALAC
Bitrate: 192kbps (CBR)
Duration: 1:18:00
Tracks: 17
Notes:
The thought of editing a custom edition for Hercules had never crossed my mind, that was until after listening to Velzquez's corker of an End Titles for like the 100th time prompted me to give the FYC a listen (despite my original misgivings of the composer's "choice" to imitate the "Remote Control School of Action Music for the Creatively Bankrupt"). It was only then I discovered that the album was a hastily edited assemblage of perhaps 85% of the recording sessions, warts and all, including: extended gaps of silence, venue noise, crude splices and, worst of all, a number of the action cues were compressed to shit for maximum wattage (I've attempted to ameliorate, but there's only so much you can mess with lossy 192 before turning it into mush, which means you certainly won't have to turn the volume up to 11 to hear this one).
In any case, Velzquez embellishes his RC'ish material with abundant color and flourishes to separate it from the usual arpeggiated, ostinato led power anthem juvenalia. Elsewhere he endows this otherwise derivative actioner with geniunely substansive material. And, by the way, this is not the "Complete" score, at least based on what is heard in the film. Apart from various source cues, there are at least two score cues outstanding.
As for my contribution: extensive nipping, tucking, slicing, dicing and scrubbing to affect a smooth flowing listening experience with as few audible glitches present as possible.
Track List:
1. Overture (1:26) *
2. The Legend of Hercules and His Twelve Labours & Rescuing Iolaus from the Pirates (6:25)
3. To Thrace (1:50)
4. The Protector of Athens & Comrades in Arms Meet Lord Cotys (2:17)
5. A Tale of Rhesus and the Misery He Has Wrought (1:40)
6. An Army of Farmers (:50)
7. Planning for Battle & Little Arias Receives the Lion's Tooth (2:58)
8. Marching Into a Trap (6:22)
9. The Gods Favour Hercules (6:14)
10. Haunted by the Past (4:02)
11. Campfire Stories & Training the Army for the Battle Against Rhesus (4:46)
