Here's something new that might be a bit of fun. As many of you may remember, I started a "Top 10 Animated Movies" thread a while ago, where folks could list their personal top 10 animated movies, which were then counted up and the collective top 10 lists were subsequently revealed. It seemed to go down a treat, and was a lot of fun to moderate. Off the back of that success, I thus present a slightly bigger-scale thread in the same vein.

Many people often complain about the Academy Awards and the BAFTA's being biased and snobbish, so here is a chance to voice your own opinion and make it count.

Without further ado, I hearby present:

THE OFFICIAL

Wow this is a lot

Right off the bat I'd say either Mad Max: Fury Road or The Revenant for cinematography.

Oh gosh. I'm not one for explaining stuff in films, like I don't know what makes "A good film." Sure, I know its all to do with the editing, the music, the script, etc. But how does one identify a good script? Coherent? Succinct? Eh. I'll try to nominate stuff, but be prepared for some really, super lame explanations.

As long as you know what the various categories are for (you know what cinematography is, what an adapted screenplay is, etc.), just nominate whichever stood out to you particularly. Like I said, don't feel you have to come up with a nomination for every category.

My nomination for Shrine Award for Best Animated Feature Film: SHAUN THE SHEEP MOVIE

This may very well be my favorite film of the entire year. Despite not having a single line of dialogue the film communicates its plot and message clearly, with Aardman proving their mastery of stop-motion animation with colorful characters and great clarity in facial expressions. It's one of the funniest films I've ever seen, and does a fantastic job at bringing the TV show to the big screen. It's full of life and laughs. 5 outta 5.

I will think on this tonight.

I might add movies that are not even out yet.

Best trailer: The Hateful Eight, trailer 2.

You saw mine?

Between the two movies I posted, I'm going to have to go with Star Wars: The Force Awakens for Best Picture.

I liked it just a little better than Jurassic World.

It is pretty much the same deal for the score for both of these movies, there may be better scores, but as of now, I haven't seen anymore than 3 films nor heard their respective scores
for this year.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens for Best Original Score.

Yes, thanks Clonemaster.

Of 2015's movies, I think the only ones I've seen so far are:

Mad Max: Fury Road
The Martian
Avengers: Age of Ultron
Ant-Man
San Andreas
Bridge of Spies
The Good Dinosaur

And I want to see these:

Inside Out
Star Wars: The Force Awakens
The Revenant
Shaun The Sheep Movie
Tomorrowland
Mission Impossible: Rouge Nation
Everest
Pan?
The Peanuts Movie?
Steve Jobs
Aloha
The Hunger Games: Mockingly Part 2
Jurassic World
Minions?

But before I see either Rogue Nation, Mockingjay Pt.2, or Jurassic World, I'm gonna have to see the previous films.

Surely this thread can just be kept serious, though - I understand where Sully is coming from and I can see how it can be really irritating. Sure, it's general discussion. Sure, the Shrine has never been serious, but there are threads specifically created for stupid, random conversations.

Surely this thread can just be kept serious, though - I understand where Sully is coming from and I can see how it can be really irritating. Sure, it's general discussion. Sure, the Shrine has never been serious, but there are threads specifically created for stupid, random conversations.

Thank you, Azetlor. Those who choose to attempt to lower this thread with their immature drivel are not welcome. I know I have no control, Mr Gold. But as OP I retain the right to ask them to stop. Whether they do or not depends on their maturity and level of respect for others.

Right, listen up folks!

As I'm sure you're all well aware, the Oscars have been and gone. It's nearly time for the Official Shrine Awards to be announced. If you've not yet voted, please do. I'm waiting to give you all the chance to vote, so hurry up!

I'll grab most of the options from Academy Award nominees. I've forgotten most films from 2015 but some stood out.

Picture: MAD MAX FURY ROAD (Spotlight did not deserve this. Saw most of the AA nominees, it was either Room, Revenant, Sicario or this.)

Leading Actor: Leonardo DiCaprio for THE REVENANT (not his best work, but seemingly better than the other noms.)
Leading Actress: Brie Larson for ROOM (surprisingly i haven't seen most of the noms here)
Supporting Actor: Benicio del Toro for SICARIO or IDRIS ELBA for BEASTS OF NO NATION (if only Hardy hadn't muttered his way through Revenant, I'd give him an award oh so many times. Bale really tried though)
Supporting Actress: Alicia Vikander for EX MACHINA (didn't see Danish Girl but did see EM)

Director: Alejandro Inarritu for THE REVENANT or George Miller for MAD MAX: FURY ROAD
Original Screenplay: EX MACHINA
Adapted Screenplay: THE BIG SHORT or ROOM

Cinematography: Emmanuel Lubezki for THE REVENANT or Roger Deakins for SICARIO (Every nom and a few others were fantastic here, every single one.)
Animated Picture: ANOMALISA (Inside Out was strong but ultimately too child-oriented to appeal to all ages.)

Musical Score: Tom Holkenborg for MAD MAX FURY ROAD (my brain can't stop humming 'brothers in arms')
Original Song: 'Earned It' 50 SHADES (honestly, none of them were any good)

Visual Effects: MAD MAX FURY ROAD or EX MACHINA (it's the little things)
Film Editing: MAD MAX FURY ROAD
Makeup and Hair Styling: MAD MAX FURY ROAD
Production Design: MAD MAX FURY ROAD
Costume Design: MAD MAX FURY ROAD
Sound Editing and Mixing: MAD MAX FURY ROAD

Right.
Everything dealing with the filmmaking world is a product made for money: but some are better than others for the story, performances, characters, art... IMO the entire Marvel Universe is pure product, with very little "art" in it.
Star Wars... Ep VII was obviously made more familiar both for the money Disney spent in buying Lucasfilm (4 billion $) and to start a new trilogy after 30 years of expectation.
Ep VIII must be more original and creative: familiarity was needed only for the introduction.

I like to argue that some MCU films are made to be more legitimate (especially since it wasn't Disney originally), but as a whole, the universe is definitely run by the factor that these comic book characters can sell because of their relevant history. Every superhero has that. Buy our comics, they say. I'm just thankful Sam Raimi and Richard Donner got to put their mark on it. They made for the most impactful films. I need no more.

Star Wars being a cash grab can stem from Empire Strikes Back. The original made money, so give us more. But because George Lucas and co. had a proper vision for the film, even though people of the time didn't get to recognize it, it would become something that will remain special. Hell, even the prequels themselves were made because Lucas still had ideas, even if it wasn't the best execution.

The Force Awakens was never needed. Granted, Lucas agaIn did try to have his ideas, but then he saw $4 billion coming out of Disney's pocket and decided to give it away. Then came a film that while successful and did have interesting ideas at points, nostalgia was the tool.

Rian Johnson has my trust, since he seems to care about making what he's working on truly unique. Having directed one of Breaking Bad's best episodes really helps. But then there's Disney...

Luckily, Disney doesn't manage the creative aspects of the Sequel Trilogy, nor the Spin-offs. It's all up to the filmmakers.

As I said, I'm pretty sure that, being inevitable an Ep VII, and being released after the Prequels (criticized because too different from the Originals) and appealing also to most children, it had to be similar to the Originals. J.J. Abrams, Rian Johnson and Colin Trevorrow were all blasted by the view of the original Star Wars, back in 1977: now, after almost 40 years that movie, a true masterpiece, has very little appeal to the children nowadays (no Jedi fights, no CGI & co). For the filmmaking art's sake, JJ Abrams made Ep VII to that these children (but, actually, everyone) could re-connect to Ep IV.
Obviously, this way the film would have lost originality. Fortunately, Abrams is a genious in writing characters (especcially in dignify female characters), and the new characters along with development of the old ones, are the main form of originality in the movie. I can say that J.J. Abrams made a revolution in casting a girl and a black-skinned guy as main characters (without romance) in Star Wars!

I'm pretty sure that a lot of fresh air will come with Ep VIII.
I'm waiting not only for a great success, but for a great movie.

I agree to everything you've said, except this:

Luckily, Disney doesn't manage the creative aspects of the Sequel Trilogy, nor the Spin-offs. It's all up to the filmmakers.

Look at the trouble Rogue One is going through at the moment and then tell me again.

Again, I think (and hope) that it's because of the filmmakers. The director knew that some re-shoots were necessary and that sometimes you discover you need to change something only in the editing room.

Anyway, we cannot prove anything right now. Let's wait for the movie to be released and see.

Trust me - it's Disney tampering.

Trust me - it's Disney tampering.

Yeah, considering the sincere lack of a Kevin Feige figure at the moment, as well as a bigger priority in profits, it would only make sense for Disney to at least have a hold in the spin offs.

One film isn't enough to show you can do well on your own. Especially when the big criticism is known to even the people that love the film.

I can imagine it turning into the Iron Man 2 of SW, where a potentially good film can get stuffed by a studio that isn't quite sure yet (though it's just the one studio the whole time).

Still, who knows. We'll decide when the film comes out.

At least Episode VIII seems to have gone very smoothly at the moment, which is probably better for it.

...But you had terrible editing.

Worst visual effects I have ever seen.

And before you go off saying "you wouldn't know good visual effects if they hit you in the rear end", well, as a matter of fact I do. I've seen Troll 2. I know well done of fine quality visual effects when I see them, and that is precisely the definition thereof.
