Since I seem to have so much time on my hands recovering from a recent illness, I have been catching up on music and movies. I am on a 1960s movie kick at the moment. Watched the 1965 B&W film noir "Sylvia" the other day, which curiously has never been released on video in any format. Wonder if there is a rights problem? It's a pretty good film with Carroll Baker at the height of her fame (or infamy) giving her best screen performance, in my opinion. Her co-stars are a very young George Maharis, Peter Lawford, Joanne Dru & Lloyd Bochner. The supporting cast is virtually a "who's who" of Hollywood's Golden Age, Ann Sothern, Viveca Lindfors, Edmond O'Brien, Aldo Ray, Jay Novello, Connie Gilchrist & Alan Carney. The film is available as a freebie to watch on Amazon Prime and is worth checking out.

SYLVIA has a great jazz flavoured score by David Raksin, including a title theme that is every bit as haunting as his much more famous one for the 1944 classic "Laura". There was a very briefly available studio recorded LP of music from the film arranged and conducted by David Raksin on Mercury Records which I remastered a few years ago from a fairly decent vinyl source. As far as I can tell, this album from SYLVIA has never been legitimately released on CD ever. The album is configured differently from the LP in that the dramatic score cues are placed first (tracks 1 thru 8) and the Source Cues placed afterwards. The score, although short, is definitely worth a listen, as it represents Raksin at his renewed 1960s creative peak. I hope you enjoy this rare but intriguing score as much as I do.

My stereo copy had excessive ring wear on the front cover but here is a scan of the monaural LP and the back. This is all I have to offer. Perhaps realmusicfan has additional scans.
