Has anyone seen Fullmetal Alchemist?

I wasn't expecting much going into it but it quickly became my favorite anime. I love the plot and character development, as much as I like anime I never became too emotionaly attached to the characters but FMA has almost brought me to tears on several occasions(sp?).

I downloaded fansubs of a few episodes right after it came out. It didn't impress me much. The animation seemed a bit above average, but it suffers from the same thing most new anime does. It's been done before.

Anime was pretty good, the ending to be revealed in the movie of Summer '05 I presume.

However, I prefer the manga.

Thing is, the anime kinda caught up with it and took a different storyline to keep it going.

The manga is the original storyline and its still in the stage where the plot starts to thicken bigtime. Looks like it's going to be a very long story, can't wait for the next book!

Well, I gave the show something of a second chance. Since I downloaded the first two episodes, I did the honest thing and bought the first dvd. And since I bought the dvd,I figured I might as well watch it.

At this point, my opinion of it is lower than before. The entire time I was watching it, I was pissed off at how ludicrous the show's premise was. Okay, so alchemy is a science. So why the hell does it all look like some kind of stereotypical sorcery? It could have been a very interesting concept if the original author had just kept it more realistic and made it seem like the characters are scientists instead of Lina Inverse clones.

There's something I missed before when I was listing the reasons I hated it. I totally forgot about the pitiful characterization of the world itself. The level of technological advancement of the world is horribly inconsistent. The early episodes hint at a political structure, but only give enough information to leave the viewer completely confused if they try to see the big picture. And on top of that, how is there a desert in the first couple of episodes? The dialogue indicates that they're still in the same country, but considering that it's supposed to be set in Europe, it makes no sense for a desert to be there.

Overall: Interesting idea, but with terrible flaws in its design and numerous continuity errors.

the show is cool, but the game is gonna be awesome, ^_^

Sorry to burst your bubble, but the game blows..

Anyway, I agree a bit with Prak on this one. Howeverm I understand that it's just a TV show and thus some of it isn't going to make sense. What I never liked was the fact they, like Park said, alchemy is a science and the brothers are supposed to be scientists. However, scientists spend thier lives picking things apart, getting to the root of things, trying to figure things out, understanding the unexplainable... yet everyone in the series who is an alchemist just seems to roll with the unexplainable like it mains nothing. Elric and transmute without circles (as well as a few other people, including some people with the red stones) but they never actually try to figure out the reason behind it as far as I've seen. They pretty much just used this and the red stones as a way of turning the series into a magic show.

I usualy let all the inconsistent stuff about the show slide and watch it whenever I'm watching adult swim on the weekend, doubt I''ll ever splurge and buy it tho. I think the main reason why I watch it is because of Edward. Shy little younger brother in a big ass suit of armour, heh.

Well, at this point, I have very mixed feelings about the show. I actually went and bought the second DVD to make sure I was giving the show a fair shake, and after watching it, my opinion has shifted somewhat.

For starters, I was drawn in by the level of pure charisma the show managed in those episodes. There was a certain element of fun that I just didn't see in the first four. I'm also fairly intrigued by this Scar character.

But then, the show hit another snag. Cheap plot devices. Case in point: Winry comes to Central to visit Ed and Al, waits anonymously for Ed, and is subsequently kidnapped by a serial killer. Ed arrives on the scene, not even knowing who he was supposed to meet and figures out that Winry was his visitor because he found a screw on the ground that just happened to be like the ones in his arm. That is about as lame a plot device as I've ever seen.

All in all, I'm split on the show. It keeps showing promise, but moments that could have been good keep getting ruined by lazy writing. Also, the premise of the show still annoys me. It would have been infinitely better if alchemy was characterized as a form of mysticism that follows scientific guidelines. As it stands, the show is making no sense. Putting your hands on a magic circle is not a catalyst for a reaction.

I'll buy the next set of episodes when they come out, but that's what will determine if I stick with the series or throw it to the wayside of mediocrity.

They also show the anmie late at night on a station here (old reruns), but I'm usually not home to watch it.

Actually, there are at least six games planned, only one of which has been released. The one already released, two more rpgs for PS2 that are supposed to be release later this year, a PS2 fighting game, some kind of GBA game, and a DS game.

The one that's out now is supposed to be pretty mediocre and none of them (apparently) follow the anime storyline.

Yet again, Square's piss-poor execution crushes all worth out of a potentially outstanding franchise.

A few extra words now that I've seen the entire series and read a bit of the manga:

The original manga showed me right off just how flawed the anime version's execution was. In a note at the beginning of the first volume of the comic, the author stated that it was not meant to be a completely serious work. It was meant to be the equivalent of a B movie; that readers are meant to laugh at the ridiculous portrayal of alchemy and not to take it too seriously. Therein lies the biggest problem. The anime does take itself seriously.

One of my biggest problems with the show was that alchemy didn't even begin to resemble any kind of science. That issue is adequately clarified over the course of the show, but about 80% of the show plods along in absolute disdain for common sense before dropping hints that it does actually come together. On the other hand, the manga immediately clarifies that alchemy is a mixture of art, magic, and science. That goes a very long way toward making it more enjoyable, even though the characters actually believe it's really science.

In short, my impression is that the manga looks infinitely better than the dreadfully mishandled anime.

Dualface

Yeah, the manga was definitly better thatn the actual show, now that you mention it. It had a much deeper outline of what happend to the Elrics, plus it also had a much more funnier storyline than the show. The show really muddles up the entire Alchemy part of the show. You could never really understand what it was in the show, like if it was magic, or a human thing. It was (the manga) much better than the show itself, and it much more clearly presented the alchemy theory.

You and Prak are so right about the difference between the anime and the manga. The anime seems to make Winry more of a "show-off star" like they do with most girls and women in anime, including Lust (like a couple of times she appeared in a few espiodes where she had no part in). They only do it to give the women of the story some more attention, in a bad way.

http://www.dra-mata.com/images/gifs/winry.gif

As you can see the little mini-clip before you, the camera is going around Winry, showing her big butt, and an up-shot of her...um...chest. The whole pic is speaking "Put me in hentai, put me in hentai!" How stupid is that?

And remember that one espisode (that I apparently believe that it was not in the manga) that had that one woman who became a theif to keep a town that was sinking to the bottom of the sea alive? Well for those who might not know, her name is Clara, but her theif name is Psiren from espisode 10: The Phantom Theif.

Well, if you recall, in one sence where Ed was chasing Psiren for stealing some jewels, they got into a fight and at the end of it when Ed jumped her, he found himself upon Psiren on the ground with her "pined-down". If you don't know the rest, when Ed had her pined-down, he thought he had his hand on her arm when it was actually on her...well you can take guess, if most of you know anime real well.

The animators/writers wanted to put that sence there for their own "personal enjoyment" while not staying in tune with the original story (and I believe they also did the same for espisode 9: Be Thou for the People, by adding a new character 'who was not seen or part of the manga' named Lyra)

Don't get me wrong, Lyra is preety cute, and she's maybe one of my favorite anime sub-characters, but when they just add a character just for the animators' "personal interest" that makes the story all wrong, even for the character.
