The Philadelphia Orchestra was Rachmaninov�s favourite, and the sound that it became famous for under Leopold Stokowski suits his music well. These recordings were praised for their sound upon release in the 1990s, and Charles Dutoit captures the �Philadelphia Sound� admirably. Rachmaninov�s own recording of the Third symphony was made with this orchestra, who premiered it under Stokowski in 1936. Compared with other versions, Dutoit�s performance is remarkable for subtle pianissimos and half tones rather than dramatic bite�but helped by the dynamic range of the atmospheric recording, it is still an impressive performance.

Bohuslav, Askhenazy - good pianist, but not so good conductor (imho). Svetlanov - big soviet style.
I prefer Rachmaninov's Symphonies with Andre Previn and LSO, as well as Kitaenko and Moscow Philharmonic. Dutoit plays Rachmaninov as a Russian impressionism, is not unreasonable) No wonder some authors, developing the theme "Levitan and Rachmaninov," "Chekhov and Rachmaninov" lyrical "landscape of mood" and "Russian Impressionism", come to the conclusion that the content of these creative artists endowed with impressionistic sound. And the sound of the name of Russian impressionism, specificity is determined by the lyricism of "mood landscapes" which are not only fixed moment of first impressions, but also act "means of knowledge of the world and man's place in it a means of dialogue with nature and that quiet abode in which the soul finds peace and repose. " We can say that impressionism in such conditions was the preconditions for its interpretation, not as something elusive and mysterious (as in the French version), as well as very near and dear beings.
