Still haven't seen the film, never heard the score.

You need to get on that, pronto. Especially the 4 hour extended cut. I'm not a huge fan of Kevin Costner movies but I could watch this one over and over. The score is a little repetitious and I can't vouch for its completeness seeing as I'm not as familiar with the music as I am the movie but, it looks complete. The movie isn't wall-to-wall score.

Having seen Avatar first, I feel it'll have been ruined. And I'll probably have to lower my expectations. Severely.

Honestly, I saw Avatar first but, they are two totally different movies (with the same general story). I enjoy both of them for their own reasons.

They're also movies from different generations.

Of course expectations have to be lowered.
Not that it's a movie full of spectacles and magic.

At the time, it was amazing for some of the scenes they did (buffalo hunt) at the then time of its release.
Sure, you can spot some of the practical effects, but it doesn't take away from the enjoyment of the film.

I wasn't expecting to like this film much, but after watching it as a rental in 1991 I bought the movie on VHS, taped the extended cut from TV, read the book, got the DVD, and later bought the Blu-ray disc. I still don't even have a Blu-ray player.
