I always hate posting these things but feel like I need to. I wanted to like this score so much. Unfortunately, I only liked it just a little bit. Every idea that made Monster House and Trick 'r Treat so enjoyable are almost entirely missing here.

Don't get me wrong, it has its good moments but, the album at its rather long length is too much. There's more menacing music than there is any really good, memorable action music. Off the top of my head, I don't even think I detected much of a theme to tie it all together. It's a very transparent score. It's bad when I enjoy the traditional music renditions that are weaved into the score more than the newly written material.

The best thing to report though is that it doesn't have that RCP sound. A negative on the sound front is that on my Apple EarPods there is noticeable clipping. I know they're not the best but if I can hear the distortion on the EarPods, I'm likely gonna hear it on whatever I play it on.

I've already said thanks for the link, but I'm writing this to add that KRAMPUS is in my humble opinion one of the year's finest scores. Why? It takes plenty of familiar Christmas tunes and turns them on their heads, incorporating them into the fabric of an action-filled horror score. It makes this score not only uniquely listenable, but also profoundly musical away from the visuals it is meant to accompany. Musical music (for lack of a better word) is so rare in film music these days that Douglas Pipes easily catapults his latest baby into this year's top ten! Thanks immensely to the original uploader for bringing this brilliant score to my attention, but I'm plunking down hard cash for this one if only to support the composer! For those among you who prefer their scores to be interesting music, please also give Benjamin Wallfisch's GAMBA a try, and, of course, John Powell's PAN.
