The Wisdom of Crowds is a theory that a crowd of people can determine a value based on the average.

In this case let us determine "the average age of shriners" by placing estimates below. Someone can do the calculation when a bunch of values have been registered.

Kicking off with...

29

I will say that people round these parts are younger than they seem. It's happened to me 4 times now, where the people I'm close with I thought were older than they actually are.

Put your own estimate of what you think the average age is. While values like "infinite" and "since the dawn of time" have philosophical validity, my calculator won't play ball with those!

Incidentally, if anyone's got an idea for another Wisdom of Crowds test, let's hear it.

Same here and I'm shocked so many people have stated their age. I've never liked people knowing my age, only my family and close friends do. That's the one thing about me I always like to keep ambiguous. I don't look my age, never have. So I love it when my coworkers try to trick me into telling them how old I actually am. They'll ask what year I was born, when I graduated high school, how old I was when this happened, etc. Sometimes I'll get mistaken for a student when I'm at a school. Hell, if I didn't have facial hair who knows how old I'd look...

Well, DAKoftheOTA, PonyoBellanote, I'm a little bemused myself. This thread was set up to test our (the shriners) collective wisdom to guesstimate the average age. I would never ask anyone for personal details.

However, what we now have are two lots of data - one set from those who made a guess (Azetlor you could be the winner with your estimate), and another set of voluntarily offered data, a random sample if you will of shriners. So we'll see how it goes on for both.

I don't mind people knowing my age. Especially if I've been with them through almost 2,000 posts.

Late 40s to early 50s I don't consider old, if you think you are old, you're wrong. Old is more like late 80s or along those lines, but often it depends. My father is 67 or 69 (one of those) and he doesn't look a day over 50. :p

Oh?

16 in July for me.

It really makes me happy to know that not all hope is lost, in that there are still young folk of this generation who take the time to appreciate film and video game scores, people who readily acknowledge the intricacies and development of such and have a passion for it. Makes me REALLY happy considering no one I know here that is that age has even listened to any sort of realm of orchestral music.

This is very true. The other night I was hanging out with one of my corworkers (she's 16) down at the breakwater. I asked her what her if she had a favourite song or musician and she showed me her phone which was littered with most of today's popular rap artists. And nothing else. "It's a phase" she said. And it really is just that, like you said, Skeleton. Kids these days are trapped by whatever is the hottest bilboard topper of the week. I often turn the radio off at work because having to hear the top 40 for 80 hours really just gives me a headache. Luckily we've got an aux cord. I put my own music on when we do our close.

I kind of wish it wasn't this way, I don't even wanna know what's 'in' right now. I've been exposed to what has been in this whole decade (or as long as I've been aware), and I've not been into it.
Do any really like it when they say they do? Or when they listen to it? It's seems kind of like taking what's put in front of you and not seeking out anything else. At all.

If they're thinking that it's a good way to fit in, it's not.
I would like to think I can find and make friends with somebody in the town I live in, the same age, that has a similar music taste to what I like, but I think that might be a hard task.

But really, I get out enough to have a good idea that finding somebody would be difficult. I'm not - we're not the majority of the population. :p
Everyone around my age group, I've met that I got along with, then and now, I only had the mainstream in common with. Star Wars, etc.
And, not one of the those people liked even The Beatles, let alone heard of them, if that tells you anything.

I've been into film music since around 2007 and since then, after having graduated high school, spent three years so far in college and working fulltime at a restaurant with over 100 employees and a high turnover, I have no met one single person who shared my affinity for film scores, except for maybe one. Our interests aren't exact as he favourite video game scores and doesn't really bother with film music, but it's better than nothing. But still, to meet someone who shares exactly how I feel about music, I don't know, it may never happen in real life, unless I meet one of you.

I've been to New Orleans and back in 2011. Then we planned on and went down there around in August, 2012. We were at my Aunt's in Oakdale, Louisiana, and were about to leave for when news on the hurricane broke, thank god we didn't go. So we decided to go to Austin, Texas instead.

Both great experiences.
