Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Music from the Official Trailer (custom edit)

A big shoutout to TheSkeletonMan939 (http://forums.ffshrine.org/member.php?u=638687) for providing me with a lossless stem to redo my previous edit!

You may have already heard the one I uploaded a few days back on YouTube (SGTBizarro), but this re-edit is far superior quality and I took much more care to get the track as polished as possible. I hope you all enjoy!!

Download links (updated 26 Oct 2015):

Fyreffect did a great job, and the FLAC version is much improved over his original edit. I can't imagine it sounding much better.

The stems are quite difficult.
It seems like both left/right channel have different points of fluctuation. A simple fix can't be done treating both channels as the same.

Thanks for the work.

How right you are, I noticed some of that going on but I don't believe I'm adept enough to tackle the edit at that level of complexity.
I'm sure with enough time, someone with more skill could produce a cleaner copy.

But! I gave it my best shot :D

It's really good as it is right now.
But definitely open to more edits.

Another issue I notice is that percussive bass clips a bit.
Clipping in trailers is becoming quite common.
Some of the The Hobbit TBOFA had clipping in it.

I think the best approach would be to take one dip a day in one channel.

What happened to your computer Dak?

No clue. It's a 2009 MacBook Pro. Last Saturday was the last time it turned on. Woke up on Sunday and I got nothing. Though it's reading the battery, it has a full charge. I removed the bottom, cleaned it out and found nasty dust clumps in the fans. Also found what looks like a burned wire which connects to one of the fans. I'm no computer engineer, but I think that may be it, and I hope that's all it is. I dropped it off at the shop Saturday. As long as my HD isn't wiped, I'll be the 2nd happiest man on earth. (If my car can be repaired and I don't need a completely new one, I'll be the #1 happiest man on earth :))

That bites! Had a somewhat similar experience with my previous desktop a few months back.

Put new PC together and used it for a couple weeks, then plugged old one in to start copying files off and the power supply popped like the 4th of July as soon as I hit the power button. Was a fairly pricey Corsair too, the last thing I expected to happen. Some of my stuff was saved in cloud storage but there's way more offline than on. Thanks for reminding me, need to swap a PSU in there to see if it'll run and/or see if the HDD didn't get fried.

I hope your lappy turns out ok, losing data is damn painful.

Unless leaked out the other two will most likely never be released. The only reason a clean version of this one came out is because the Disneyland Facebook page uploaded the wrong version of the final trailer

Kind of late picking up on this but blocked fans aren't going to kill your laptop. It's going to put you in a nasty place when you're pushing its limits, yes, but if you treat her gently, you won't have any problems :) Did you already get it back?

Ok, this starts on-topic and veers slightly off, but I need some help from other philes:

I use MP3Gain to standardize all my music so I'm not constantly adjusting volume. It's mostly served me well, with a few notable exceptions. I've had everything set to 89db for a while, but when I added the Mockingjay soundtrack and then this trailer music, both of them distorted heavily after I used the gain, and were normal again when I kept them at their default gain.

I decided to overreact and loaded my entire 100GB+ library into MP3G and set it to "Apply max no-clip Gain for Album". It worked fine, but now some things are insanely loud, and others (Mockingjay - 77.3db) are stupidly quiet, which negated my original intention of not having to mess with the volume constantly.

Is there a happy medium to this? Some way to not have distortion at higher levels? Is the distortion from my particular rip, or is it the way the music was processed for everyone? I listen to soundtracks about 18 hours a day, but I've never delved too deep into advanced audiophile stuff. :( Any insight would be fantastic!

I usually go with track mode instead.

On albums where they are seamlessly involved with other tracks, you can hear the obvious difference. But you deal because it's not even close to a third of the music that benefits the most from track-mode.

Foobar2000, when you scan for Album-mode, it gives you values for both track & album.

Keep apply max & no-clip, but for track this time.

The dcp/prores/dvcpro trailers for these clip in the source, so the clipping will result in the output project too.
Unless measures were to taken to smooth it out before further processing.

The Hobbit 3: TBOTFA had severe clipping in all sources, too.

Thanks for the info! I definitely have a few of my "problem albums" that are either nearly-silent or distorted to heck. So irritating.

I'm going to try the max no-clip overnight today, hopefully it's more sensible than album mode. Do you recommend a different tool other than MP3G? I'm open to suggestions! Also, is there a way to min/max the process? Like, can I do max no-clip per track, but no more than x-db, or no less x-db (even though that would pseudo negate the reason for doing it - I'd rather have a bit of distortion than silent music). Thanks again for the tips!

I generally use Foobar2000 for playback, replaygain and some conversions.
It's got all the different settings for ReplayGain that you need.
