BONUS: Sam Smith - Writing's On The Wall CD Single (FLAC & MP3 320)
(thank you so much scorehunter66)

1. Writing's on the Wall
2. Writing's on the Wall (Instrumental)

FYI - the instrumental on this CD single is unabridged unlike on the OST.

Download:
https://mega.nz/#!chEzWAQK!EyKv6TInTA_f4_Pj_Ld6IvRn65DvxfgVbVzOrwIfVu4

BONUS #2: the abridged film version (recreation) of Sam Smith's Writing's on the Wall. Made using the single instrumental and regular track based on my memory of the cutdown song in my two viewings. The real one has IIRC a couple Newman flourishes included and a rather wonderful lead-in from the last cue of the pre-title sequence.

Download (FLAC and MP3 320)
https://mega.nz/#!0lsEEJSZ!DhttFMSG4FUwUiv0umYpvFtL4EIaX5umqkOYnUrFYqQ

BONUS #3: THE GUNBARREL! Albeit it doesn't have the build up that we get over the studio logos but this is as good as it gets, and in 24-bit FLAC. Thank the folks at Sony for using it in the new short featurette that came out this morning.

On glancing through it, it's like Newman has had another go with his Skyfall score and improved it quite a bit in some areas. Also, the main song instrumental is less than half the actual song's running time, so will still need to get the CD single in order to acquire the full version - unless it's on that Japan site that is?!

The site has the official digital single in 24-bit FLAC - which doesn't include the instrumental.

Newman's theme for the organisation itself (best featured in the first half of the end titles track) eerily reminds me of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhKHt85CFwI Which is good because I LOVE this piece.

Awesome!!

Fun fact: The first "Los muertos vivos estan" translates into "the dead are alive" which is part of a small song featured in a concert in the Zocalo, in Mexico's opening sequence. It has a crazy drum rythm too. I was one of the extras in the filming and it's quite catchy. It's a bit dumned down in Day of the Dead but it's the same freaking song

As I have posted in the other Bond thread. Sam Smiths title song is a boring joke. You don't use a pussy voice like his for such a song.
I have just listened to a few tracks of the Spectre OST and it's the normal Thomas Newman 'go nowhere' rubbish. I miss the days of Barry and his works of art which added depth to the film, all we have now is noise with a capital N.

Some have mentioned that they miss John Barry, which I can sympathize with. However, I am also nostalgic for David Arnold. He complimented the existing Bond themes with EDM instruments and depth of sound. Not to mention that he also composed great songs for the credit sequences. In my opinion, his music was the unsung hero of the movies they accompanied.

Apparently Newman conducted the orchestra when the song was recorded.

Speaking of - anyone had the chance to get the full instrumental? Also the cut-down instrumental we have on this album actually appears in the film apparently.....

EDIT: Have got it now and will be uploading in a bit for you to post the link alongside your other two in your opening post. Also, I now know why it was abridged on the OST, the orchestra and Sam were obviously recorded simultaneously and there's a bit of vocal bleed during the quiet bits as a result.

Have been comparing the complete main song instrumental with the abridged one from the OST and can see where and why all the cuts were made for that version now. Sam and the orchestra were obviously recorded simultaneously, so there's some unavoidable vocal bleed through during the quieter passages as a result. I suspect he and the piano were in one room with the orchestra in another.

Thomas Newman, recognizable like Danny Elfman. James Bond's A Spectre of Unfortunate Events... but it's nice.

Writing's on the Wall (lyricized) was a mistake to listen to. Sounds like someone grabbed Sam Smith's balls and janked them a few times during the song. The instrumental version has a faint Smith bleeding through... very bad, overall.

That was me (Antovolk did credit me with it in his updated posts) and the reason why Sam's vocal is just about audible on the quieter parts of the track is because the orchestra and he were recorded simultaneously as opposed to the orchestra being pre-recorded beforehand. Personally, I don't know why they couldn't have gone for a second take with just the orchestra alone so a clean copy of it could be released along with the main vocal version, but there you go! Not great for a commercial release but a whole lot better than the karaoke efforts currently available for it in my opinion.

This whole issue is why parts were re-recorded by Newman during the film scoring sessions - as the abridged version on the OST is actually in the film.

Hello - I was lucky enough to see the film yesterday and the soundtrack order pretty much follows the action of the film.

There are a couple of cues I could tell weren't on the soundtrack though.

Notably - MINOR SPOILER AHEAD -

The gun barrel returns to the start of the movie! And with an original orchestration of the Bond theme by Thomas Newman, which is sadly not on the soundtrack.

At the end of the movie, Newman copies pretty much entirely the way he scored the end scene in Skyfall when Bond returns to work and meets the new M (but this time with the subtle addition of vibraphone) and then it goes into the David Arnold arrangement of the Bond theme from Casino Royale - which Arnold gets credited for in the end titles.

That's the only time in the film that you hear the Bond theme in its entirety sadly :(

raybond

If the description of the gunbarrel is correct, hopefully it will fade out before the title card 'the dead are alive' appears and then segue straight into Los Muertos Vivos Estan. That should make it quite rip-able. Certainly there are enterprising folks here who seem able to edit out the gunshots from previous unreleased versions. Depending on how much overlap there is on the final scene(s), the same may be true for the end statement of the Bond theme. The script does mention 'distant strains of the Bond theme...' over the last couple of scenes.

I have to say I quite like the new soundtrack. I like how Newman has woven the Bond theme through the new cues, rather than a full on statement of the theme. However it is missing a true finale. The track described as end credits is too anonymous for be a closing piece for a film or album. Each time I have listened to the score album, without watching the track names, I still do not realise when I am listening to the end credits track.

I have always wondered why the gunbarrel music often gets omitted from the score albums? Is it a rights, or composer ego issue? If the Bond theme does indeed play out the end of the film, then what is the final track on the OST (SPECTRE [End Credits]) for?

Final point, I am not happy with the instrumental Title track on the single. The voice bleed is simply amateurish. For a professional product, it is really unacceptable. A fan-made rip can allow for vocal bleeds as we do not have the resources to make a clean version of a track, but not something from a record label. Did they not even listen to it before they made the discs? It is either sloppy QC or no customer service. However, the do prefer the OST instrumental. Whilst shorter, it seems fuller. Without Smith's vocal's the melody seems anaemic. Yet together they work beautifully (yes, I am one of the few that likes the song). Well I guess the karaoke version on YT will have to do in the interim.

Still roll on 4th November. If only I still lived in the UK, then I could enjoy it all tomorrow. Lucky buggers.

scorehunter66
10-25-2015, 09:27 PM
The main title instrumental that appears on the OST is just an edited down version of the one included on the CD single. Also, the complete CD single version has had a volume maximiser applied to it (making it approximately 3.5 DBs louder as a result), whereas the abridged OST version hasn't.

Incidentally, out of interest, I put both into Soundforge and was able to exactly recreate the abridged version using the complete and am now considering adding some further bits into it that weren't affected by Sam's vocal bleed (I suspect it came from the piano track and that the piano may have been in the same room as Sam was at the time of recording).

Finally, I have a number of original song instrumentals by such artists as Michael Buble and Alfie Boe, and some of those suffer from the same problem as well.

I think that when they bring out the soundtrack in chronological order they might give away too much spoilers of the storyline of the movie. A soundtrack-cd must have a good musical order for the pure music-lovers who wants to listen the whole cd from beginning to the end. A good mix and order of themes is then more important, I think.

It's just a cut down of the official instrumental on the CD single of WOTW. His arrangement in the film is even shorter but it's his own arrangement and orchestration.

Move Day of the Dead to after Los Muertos Vivos Estan, and Crows Klinik and Madeleine to after Kite in a Hurricane.

Well shit. And you can forget those being on the FYC since they're not Newman's material. Unless he co-wrote WOtW

He didn't. He MAY have conducted the orchestra when the song was recorded in January but yeah, shame about his new WOTW arrangement which is short but reeeeeeealy nice. And that gunbarrel cue which is just amazing.
it starts off over the studio logos with the Arnold-style build-up, then the DUN DUN DUUUUN over black, then the dots and barrel accompanied by a TND-style cue.

Must've been some fancy editing then, because you can hear his falsetto vocals in all 4 choruses of the full instrumental, even during the parts used on the album edit. Actually, don't take my word for it, just make up the abridged version from the full instrumental and then mix-paste it exactly over the original and the result you get is the same awful flanging effect you get when you try to overlay two virtually identical tracks over one another. Furthermore, if the complete instrumental hadn't had a volume maximiser applied to it, both would cancel each other out if you inverted one of them before overlaying it over the other. Finally, there's an instrument missing from the bridge section on the abridged version, which may have contained the offending vocal bleed, hence why it was removed. Anyway, if you're a dab hand at audio editing and mixing, the above shouldn't take you more than 20 minutes to achieve :-)

I think I heard Smith say they used his demo track as the final vocal, so I guess that would have been a voice and piano track dubbed over an orchestral arrangement?

Anyone got a shot at the chronological order yet? I've seen the movie and the soundtrack does appear to be mostly in the right order, Day of the Dead excluded of course and I suppose a few other tracks too.

I just realised it's THIRTEEN YEARS since a Bond movie started with the gunbarrel sequence! Good to see it back.

Edit; looking through the tracks again I think maybe DOTD is the ONLY track that is out of order. "Kite in a Hurricane" could be at two points in the movie so not sure on that one. I'm only going by track titles I don't have the musical ear to recall all the cues after one viewing. The tag scene into the credits is very very similar to Skyfall too so a rip of that will do for now in a Spectre playlist.

To be frank, they could have quite easily cleaned the track up prior to release, so it's a bit sloppy that they didn't. However, I know a great sound engineer that could do the job without it affecting the instrumental, so am going to ask him to sort it out as I really love the track.

Thanks for your efforts with the Gunbarrel and WOTW instrumental. Such a shame they are not on the CD.
