This is a new, improved complete recording of Gottfried Huppertz's seminal
silent film score, Die Nibelungen (Part I: Siegfried, Part II: Kriemhild's Revenge).
It was made by the HR Sinfonieorchester (Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra) under
film music specialist Frank Strobel (an improvement on the enthusiastic, but amateurish
Berndt Heller). It coincides with a restoration of the two-part film by the Friedrich Murnau
Foundation, the same people who so famously restored Metropolis.

Plot, Siegfried
Siegfried, son of King Sigmund, hears of the beautiful sister of Gunter, King of Worms, Kriemhild.
On his way to Worms, he kills a dragon and finds a treasure, the Hort. He helps Gunther to win Krimhild,
a mask that makes him invisible proves to be very useful. But because Brunhild is cursing Kriemhild,
she tells her what really happened. Now Brunhild wants Siegfried's head. Is Gunther going to do
her that favor?

Plot, Kriemhild's Revenge
After Siegfried's dead, Kriemhild marries Etzel, the King of the Huns. She gives birth to a child,
and invites her brothers for a party. She tries to persuade Etzel and the other Huns, that they
kill Hagen, the murderer of Siegfried, but he is protected by her brothers. A fierce battle begins
to force her brothers to give Hagen to her.

Gottfried Huppertz (11 March 1887 � 7 February 1937) was a German composer who is
perhaps most known for his scores to German expressionist silent films such as the science
fiction epic Metropolis (1927). He collaborated with legendary director Fritz Lang on multiple
occasions. Huppertz studied at the Conservatory of Music in Cologne and worked during
World War I in Coburg, where he debuted in 1910 as a singer and actor. In 1920 he went
to Berlin as an opera singer at the Nollendorfplatz theatre.

His first composition, "Rankende Rosen", was dedicated to the actor Rudolf Klein-Rogge,
who introduced him in the early 1920s to director Fritz Lang and to Thea von Harbou
(who would later marry Lang, but was at the time still married to Klein-Rogge). In the
film, Dr. Mabuse, der Spieler (1922), Huppertz worked as an extra in the role of a hotel
manager.

Huppertz composed his first film score for Lang's film Die Nibelungen (1924). While
working on his 1925 score for the film Zur Chronik von Grieshuus, Huppertz began
working on the score of another film for Lang, Metropolis (1927). This became his
best-known film score. Besides scoring, Huppertz also wrote songs. Only some of his
music has been recorded. The theme music for the first of the Karl May talkies,
Through the Desert (1936), is included in the Karl May Film Music Collection
Box Wild West, Hot Orient.



Huppertz's publicity photo as a "Kammers�nger" (It is a German
honorific title for distinguished singers of opera and classical music.)

It took me almost two decades of trying (and trying and trying) to be able to see Lang's Niebelungen. This score stays in my mind, heart and soul. As for me, I only knew about this recording on Sunday -- and not even here. Again and again (even more than trying and trying), I am so thankful to you for music and for writing. If it's possible, may I have the flacs for this - yes, it's rare but it's as great as Shostakovich's score. Thank you for doing EVERYTHING, Mr. Wimpel!

I recently bought the newly released CD recording of Huppertz's score for Metropolis (which I've been a strong admirer since I first experienced the incredible film) as I was so pleased with it - having listened to it before purchasing. This set being comprised of 4 discs overwhelms me with joy (though it's nonetheless appropriate seeing as altogether both Siegfried + Kriemhild's Revenge was over 5 hours long).
As you so mentioned; I'm under no illusions that I'll surely enjoy this recording, which inevitably means I'll also be ordering a copy of this release ASAP.
I'm so glad Gottfried Huppertz is finally, after all these decades, being recognised with standalone music releases as he's long been subject of my admiration.

Link received. Thank you very much again for this music, wimpel69! When the music took center stage in the movie experience it is amazing what composers could deliver. No hiding behind dialogs or deafening sound effects. For movies that are conceived as cinematic operas such as the recent “Mad Max: Fury Road” with nearly no dialogs, the music could have taken center stage rather than constantly competing or trying to outdo sound effects. I wonder what it would be like to play modern movies with just music. Maybe, 90 years from now, some we’ll redo the music to create a different experience…
