I know cowboy bebop is revered as one of the best anime's made but I feel like its a bit overrated. I mean it feels more like a western cartoon than an anime, as it is drastically different from any generic anime. Just thinking out loud...

Cowboy Bebop is a nostalgia trip for many viewers. One of the main draws is the lack of tropes which has plagued anime for years. Hence why it feels different from other series.

As far as being overrated goes, Bebop isn't as badly deified as Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (great anime, but it has tropes), Mushishi (tedium is popular now), or worst of all, Kingdom (people must love Naruto ripoffs).

I agree with you! Back then I watched until episode 18 when I finally lost interest. It just didn't manage to capture me like a lot of other animes did. Someday I want to give it another try and rewatch everything only to understand what the hype is about. Maybe the last episodes and the movie make up for the rest?

No I don't think that if you didn't like the 3rd episode, then you would not like the rest of the series. In my opinion, its just so different from most anime. I think it's because everything about the series is so western (the setting, the lack of structured plot line), that it seemed to resonate with western audiences and thus it becoming a big hit in the U.S. It was so American that even people aren't into anime like it. At least that's what I think

I actually found the series to be extremely good. It has great characters, mecha, stories and scenes, and the music is incredible too. Quite a tidy anime IMO. There are other anime shows out there that really are dull. About the show being so western, I don't really agree. If you actually watch it, you'll see a convergence of several Terran cultures, and some of the stories take place in outer space where at present there is no defined culture. The show progresses with various bounty hunting episodes, some hilarity along the way, and an unfolding plot involving Spike's arch enemy Vicious and a mob gang war. Cool. The movie stays faithful to the show.

It was the only anime I watched at 12am - 3am when I should've been sleeping for school lol (or during break).
Those were the days.

Cowboy Bebop is really good at the end. I liked the show a lot, I asked my brother to watch it. he found it very boring. I told him to stick all the way through to the end and he did. He liked the couple of end episodes, to him it only got real good at the end. His rating is good (not great or excellent, but definitely not below average).

I would not say it is the best, just real close. When I first watched it on Cartoon Network, I could not get into it, after seeing the movie, I went back and watched it again. Then I really like it, great cast of characters, the Bebop, and the music. My favorite episode is Heavy Metal Queen....WHAT DID YOU SAY? I CAN'T HEAR YOU!

I couldn't agree more. I loved the setting and particular style. The music is a fundamental part in this. Can't wait to rewatch it. Does anybody know if it's currently available in a streaming service?

I must agree with Epic. The show got really good to me in the last couple of episodes. The way they ended Spike's journey is something you would rarely see in your average western cartoon. Kudos to Yoko Kanno who did most, if not all of the composition. Great OST.
About being overrated... It's a good anime but it might be a little overestimated. Most of the episodes feels like random adventures throughout space, only leaving bits of the core story (so to speak) scattered.

You need to define where is Cowboy bebop in the community in order to known is overrated or not. In Myanimelist is in 27 of best animes (include films). Is very high but, in my opinion, OK. Full metal alchemist brotherhood is 1 and Steins;gate is 3. So I think there are others animes more overrated than Cowboy bebop.

If you want to talk overrated I've got a bone to pick with Evangelion.

Wow I didn't expect ppl to talk about this after so long. But in all honesty, I really liked Cowboy Bebop. It is one of my favorite animes. However, I feel as though it's been given praise as if it was revolutionary to anime (though it may be, I'm not an anime historian). Then I pose this question to you all, what is an anime you all recommend / think its is at least one of the greatest animes of all time?

I've been giving it a re-watch with my boyfriend. The original version, not the remixed version, since I've never actually seen the original. It's actually a lot better than I remember it being. Each episode subtly develops the world and the characters with almost no exposition whatsoever, just dropping little breadcrumbs that stick in your mind. In the worlds of a better critic than I, you may not have noticed it, but your brain did.
The animation is superb and the English voice acting is amazing, outside of a few mispronunciations. I think the English version really sells the idea of the universe being a melting pot, better than the Japanese version, anyways. There's a lot more accents and ethnic slang thrown around in very appropriate ways in the dub, something I don't see in a lot of anime that's meant to be set in a culturally diverse world.
But that might just be me.
