I admit, I haven't seen this one in many years, and I think I only saw it a couple of times. I remember thinking it was nice, but I just never wanted to go back to it for whatever reason. I certainly don't have the venom for this film that it seems like the general public does, although I think it's softened over the years. When it was initially released, it received mixed reviews, mostly on the negative side, panning the silly plot, bloated runtime, and weak score by Leslie Bricusse. (Incidentally, although Anthony Newley is only an actor here, Newly collaborated with Bricusse on a few occasions, including the hit musical Stop The World, I Want To Get Off, the success of which most likely got both their jobs in this film, and the cult classic Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory, including "The Candy Man," a cover of which became the only Hot 100 #1 hit in the career of Sammy Davis, Jr.) Audiences, which sometimes didn't care what critics said, sided with them this time and stayed away. Doctor Dolittle was one of three big-budget flop musicals made by 20th Century Fox after the smash success of The Sound Of Music in an attempt to recapture its success. (That success helped save the studio after it was nearly bankrupted by the failure of Cleopatra, also starring Rex Harrison, to make a profit, despite being that year's highest-grossing film.) Along with Star! with Julie Andrews and Hello Dolly with Barbra Streisand, Doctor Dolittle almost bankrupted Fox once again - their fortunes, ironically, being restored with a reissue of The Sound Of Music, the film that saved them from bankruptcy in 1965. Despite mostly negative reviews, Fox mounted an incredible Oscar campaign for the film, which included wining and dining the Academy, resulting in several nominations, including Best Picture - baffling for a film mostly hated by critics - and two wins, for its visual effects and the song "Talk To The Animals."

On a trip to the record shop, I flipped quickly through the $1 record section and came across this record and it spoke to me, so I figured I'd pick it up. And honestly? The score by itself is actually a nice treat and makes me want to find my DVD of the movie and pop it in. It's not exactly going to make you forget the Sherman Brothers' best work, but what could? Either way, the record sounds very good, although it wasn't in pristine shape. Fortunately, ClickRepair and DeNoise did most of the cleanup work for me. I had downloaded a WAV rip of the long-out-of-print CD release a long time ago (which simply replicated the original LP format), and while I wanted most of this rip to come from my record since I paid for it, I did use that lossless rip to patch up some problem areas on tracks 2 and 9 that I couldn't or didn't want to try to fix manually. I've tried to make it as seamless as possible, but it may still be noticeable, but just slightly. This rip is definitely 99% vinyl-sourced, which is what I wanted. The CD has been out of print for quite a while and even used copies don't come cheap, and it doesn't add anything such as additional score, full-length film versions of songs that may have been shortened for the LP as was the usual way in those days, complete overture, main titles, entr'acte, or exit music, or anything of that nature. For the bonus tracks, I ripped the overture, main titles, entr'acte, and exit music from my DVD copy of the film.
