The English language version of “The Young Girls of Rochefort”, filmed simultaneously with the familiar French language version (Les Demoiselles de Rochefort), was never exhibited anywhere except briefly in Australia and has never been restored or released on video. The familiar French version that is now on DVD was shown everywhere else, including the USA. The English language soundtrack LP was released by Philips as a truncated 40 minute LP only in Holland & Australia and quickly went out of print. It was finally released on CD recently but only as part of a multi disc box set of Michel Legrand’s film music. This new DSD remix of the English soundtrack is about 75 minutes long and most of the dance music is identical to the French version but the orchestrations for the songs are different and of course the lyrics are English. Stars Gene Kelly, George Chakiris & Grover Dale plus Danielle Darrieaux (who was the only one not dubbed in the French version) all mostly do their own singing. Catherine Deneuve & Francois Dorelac’s vocals are dubbed by studio singers Jackie Ward & Sue Allen Other studio singers include Robert Tebow (Maxence), Bill Lee (Simon) plus vocals by Diana Lee, Judith Lawler, Sally Stevens & George Becker. I hope you find it an interesting alternative to the familiar French language version. There are some really enjoyable songs and the orchestrations are “Hollywood lush” at its best.

Jacques Demy & Michel Legrand's 1967 musical THE YOUNG GIRLS OF ROCHEFORT has received some attention recently as the inspiration
for the visual style and musical sequences in the recent romantic comedy with music,"La La Land".
