Happy birthday Metroid! I realize I'm a bit late, but still.

Sound in Action is a disappointing soundtrack, and nowhere near what the amazing music in Super Metroid (or the original) deserved. The music of the first 3 Metroid games vividly captured the lonely, ominous atmosphere in which they were played, and are shining examples of what chiptune and tracker music can be. Yet, apart from the arrangements at the beginning, SiA destroys this atmosphere with poor sound quality, sound effect ridden mixes, and tracks that suddenly cut off.

My aspiration with Metroid: In the Action is simply to fix the flaws of the official soundtrack, and do justice to the music. That said, the biggest change from SiA isn't to the sound that was already there, but the addition of Metroid 2: Return of Samus to the selection of music. A few other changes were made to the tracklist -- notably, the SFX tracks from the SM section were removed, and music from the NES version of M1 was added. The mastering is minimal, since I don't have much experience with that. The one major change I made was to the stereo field. The FDS, NES, and GB were incapable of stereo sound, so I separated the channels to give, hopefully, a clearer, and more pleasant experience with both headphones and speakers. Likewise, Super Metroid's music was panned a bit too harshly for headphone users in some places, so I added some crossfeed.

Thanks go out to the people at Nintendo for creating the Metroid series, and to Hirokazu Tanaka, Ryoji Yoshitomi, Kenji Yamamoto, and Minako Hamano in particular. In addition, I should thank Datschge, YK, nensondubois, and Carnby for creating the .SPC for Super Metroid, as well as whomever made the .NSFs for both versions of Metroid, and the .GBS of Return of Samus. Kode64's plugins for Foobar2000 were also invaluable.
