Filmcollector16 has just presented this forum with a fantastic 24 bit vinyl restoration of the original 1972 soundtrack album from ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA, composed & conducted by JOHN SCOTT.
Thread 192116

This is one of my favourite film scores and is certainly one of the greatest symphonic works of the late 20th Century. John Scott re-recorded his score in Berlin in the 1990s for JOS Records and included 25 minutes of additional music not on the soundtrack LP. Although the re-recording is very good, as is often the case with film composers conducting their works away from the films, the tempos are broader and in some cases slower than the same cues on the soundtrack, plus as good as the Berlin recording sessions are, it is still no match for the incomparable London Philharmonic Orchestra & CTS engineering staff of the 1970s heard on the soundtrack. Not wanting to take anything away from filmcollector16’s superlative restoration, I decided to try to combine the superior soundtrack performance with the additional selections Scott recorded in Berlin to produce a more definitive version of the complete score. The hardest part in all this is attempting to fuse an analog recording with a digital one recorded 20 years later in a different venue and making it as seamless in the transitions as possible. The digital recording is brighter sounding and the analog soundtrack is warmer and more musical sounding. There is no magical way to accomplish this except by careful remixing and equalization of the elements of both recordings. To that end, I decided to also remix both recordings into 3 channels to have better control over the final 2 channel mix and although I can’t say that I have completely succeeded, I can say that this new mix allows us to hear John Scott’s essentially complete score for ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA in the best possible way, given the limited choices available. How does this mix differ from previous versions, including the soundtrack LP? Well, it is a different sound which you’ll either like or hate, with the orchestra spread out more evenly between (and beyond) the two channels. The digital segments are much more warm and musical sounding than the JOS CD, closer to the sound of the 1972 soundtrack, in my opinion. Track 17 is a 10 minute concert suite which I compiled from the re-recording sessions, including a slightly longer version of the “Confrontation with Pompey” cue, the only one that differed musically from the soundtrack since all the other cues on the re-recording that were on the soundtrack LP were in some cases longer but only due to Scott’s tempos discussed above. I hope you like this DSD remix/remaster of a score that is surely, as filmcollector16 said in his post, John Scott’s masterpiece.

Great to see a Good Co-Production in operation here! This is some example here for some of you to get creative and share some of your rare stuff. It takes time effort and money to produce these shares. So lets see some more ouput from some of you. Two mega rare John Scott's on the way this week! from me

Truly a labor of love on your part, Stevie! You NEVER cease to amaze me with what you come up with. This was one of Heston's pet projects back in the '70's..... he did choose carefully whom he wanted to write this score....and the two of you have improved this GREATLY
over the original release. I have just heard it tonight, and it is so much better than what I have heard before. BRAVO!

Yes, I agree, this truly is a labor of love, Stevie. Amazing!

How on earth did you ever figure out what bars should omitted from the Overture, or what pieces fit together in the Act I finale and Act II Entr'acte?

John Scott deserves so much recognition, hes truly one of the best composers when it comes to historical and maritime themes

Ive always fantasized about having a boat and sailing the seas, and this fantasy achieves some impetus everytime I listen to one of those cousteau scores

having expressed my admiration for Scott, I have not heard this one! so Im guessing Im in for a treat!! will coment later, and thanks to steviefromalaska and filmcollector16 for spreading the love for this excellent craftsman!
