A Kanyenda / Tangotreats Co-Production

The series of co-productions I have produced with Herr Salat must have made some impact, because at the beginning of this year, Kanyenda approached me with an interesting project; would I be interested in transferring some vinyl? By the way, the two records in question were in mint condition and featured rare scores by Kentaro Haneda and Seiji Yokoyama. Uh, let me think about this for about a sixteenth of a second - YES, PLEASE!

SEIJI YOKOYAMA
Symphonic Rhapsody 198X (Future War 198X)
The New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra

Scat by Kazuko Kawashima

My transfer from Kanyenda's vinyl; made and edited at 24-bit resolution 96000hz before downsampling to 16-bit 44100hz for distributions. Tagged in Japanese and English. Playing time 50:07.

My "sorry I'm late" apologies must be pretty legendary around these parts; Herr Salat knows all about my delays, and I'm afraid Kanyenda has been on the receiving end of the worst one yet. On the same week he made the request, I started a new relationship which has occupied my time (and money) - and in April, I had a stroke. My recovery goes well; my initial loss of feeling on the right hand side is *mostly* back - and fortunately there was no impact on my eyesight or hearing. Nonetheless, I've been really crappy at keeping Kanyenda informed and for that I must give my heartfelt apologies.

These are just magical - and you probably haven't heard them, or even heard *of* them.

The Haneda album should be coming up early tomorrow - I would have posted them at the same time but a recent update to Windows 10 has screwed up my scanner and, although the Haneda scans were completed I needed to go back to re-do a few (due to fingerprints on the glass...) so I'm going to work on that tonight and we'll be in business.

A little about the transfers. I really love Japanese vinyl. I deal with records from all over the world of varying ages and in a variety of conditions - I don't know why, but anything from Japan is invariably in mint or near mint condition. The Yokoyama album was indeed spotless, to the extent where I felt bad about actually taking it out of the case and putting it on the turntable - but once I had done so, initial predictions about the sound quality were proven correct - gorgeous, utterly gorgeous.

Track 7 (Dancing Prism) was difficult; cut pretty hot and featuring "awkward" instrumentation (close-miked drum set, bass drum, funky bass guitar) it caused a few tracking errors which I have only been able to partially resolve. This is a combination of five or six different transfers made at different tracking weights - tracking is consistent and there are no skips... but there is occasional audible distortion. I wasn't prepared to track any higher as it would have risked damaging the record. It still sounds gorgeous.

Oh yeah... and the English track titles. They're horribly Engrishy. They're also exactly what's printed in the booklet. C'est la vie!

Amazing share!! Thank you so much!!

I could never understand why this film fell into obscurity, especially with the huge budget and amazing animation. I guess it just didn't do well when it came out or something.

After listening extensively to this album, I'm more than pleased with the music and the outcome of the outstanding quality tangotreats' vinyl transfer.

When I decided to buy this album and share it, I already knew very well what I was to find here. This score was released a few years before than Seiji Yokoyama was to score the uber-popular, at least in Mediterranean countries, anime series Saint Seiya, but his recognizable style of scat female songs and disco and funky flavored action pieces is also present here. Although the tone of this score is much more apocalyptic and less heroic than in Seiya, Seiji Yokoyama offers enough variety to keep us captivated.

For example, the track titled "Eagle Scramble" is very reminiscent of other action and intense pieces, with swirling strings, blasts of brass and that seventies bass in constant build-up and always dynamic, sort of a proto version of "Fly! Pegasus" or "Galaxian Wars". Nevertheless, where I think this score really shines is in the treatment of its main theme, with plenty of incarnations along the soundtrack, a soulful and emotive piece and sometimes devastating. My favourite track is "Nocturne" that is a beautiful and sorrowful variation of said theme, it's just a quiet prelude to complete annihilation, what is the film is about. It's always a good sign when a score can invoke so easily the images of a film/anime, and in this case, Seiji Yokoyama transport us to a world where the hope is almost lost and all what is left is to see how the world faces its end.

Exquisite and dramatic.

Delayed response: Thank you, joaoseya2 - more-or-less completely recovered. I'm a little less steady on my feet than I was, and I get tired easier, but apart from that all is well - around the time I posted this album I was only a couple of months out of hospital and still going in the scanner regularly to see how the artery was healing - and it didn't look like it was. But in May 2016, I had a final scan and the doctor was pleased that the artery was in fact healed, so I came off the medication and that was pretty much the end of it. When they show you the picture of your brain and start pointing out all the areas where the tissue has died and will never recover, you never think the same way ever again. I still have a hard time knowing that it's still there in my head. It's like wanting to swat a spider off your arm, except that it's inside your skull and you can't do a damn thing about it.

But, I lived, and long term, the quality of my life is basically unaffected. I was lucky - almost scarily so. I'm heading towards my third "post-stroke" birthday next week and I'm just starting to "rest easy"...

As for the upload, if Kanyenda has no objections I'll definitely re-upload tomorrow. :)
