I can't believe it. Out of 25-30 different themes that were used during the three years the show ran, this jerk refused to use even one, even Solo's theme, or Illya's theme (Wild Bike) and even refused to use the main theme. What was he thinking? Parts of this sound like a throwback to the first Pink Panther movie, others sound like something that Brian Tyler has done for his movies, almost exactly. This does not give me a good feeling for the hope of this film.

From what I have read it was Ritchie's idea not to use any of the old theme, Pemberton wanted to add it, at least at the end credits, but no.

Obviously, he decided to do the film his own way, from what I've seen of it, there is no UNCLE special, no UNCLE car, and no UNCLE organization. WTF was he doing? I really enjoyed his films snatch, rocknrolla, and several others, but with this, looks like he really screwed the pooch.

Pretty good stuff. Strong 60's feel, with a lot of presence.
I like the original series, and I think this will work just fine, especially in line with what I've seen in the trailers.
The lack of the original scene is regrettable, but, honestly, it would never work in the context of this score.

I saw this movie also, and wondered what was Guy Ritchie doing? This was not the UNCLE that I remembered, this had nothing to do with the old TV show, just in name only. There was no UNCLE gun, no UNCLE car, and no UNCLE organization. Mr. Waverly was not a 70 year old British gentleman, he was a 50 something punk, who seemed to be a con artist! Solo was not a James Bond type person, but more like a "It takes a thief" character, who was caught by the CIA, and forced to work for them, just like the old "It takes a thief" TV show. And Illya was some type of James Bond evil villain thug, who was strong enough to rip parts of a car off, and throw Solo across the room! No UNCLE music in the whole movie. Like "Mission Impossible" with the main theme? What the hell was this guy doing? Really a major bummer for us fans, and since the movie is bombing at the box office, it's clear that there will not be a sequel, and this will kill any chances of that. This was the film that I've been waiting over 5 years for them to get done? What a bunch of crap!

Fan of the original show here, you do not speak for all of us.

I found the movie to be quite enjoyable. A brilliant update on what was really a super campy show (especially later on)

I felt the movie did a great job handling all of that. All of the cast was perfect. Hammer stole the show (which is odd with how charismatic Cavill is) If you had paid attention you would have seen that the reason there "was no UNCLE" was that this was the origin film. It is sad that its box office results will probably lead to no sequel.

And to the OP. Thanks.

I have some authority to speak as an original kid from U.N.C.L.E. My tenth birthday party was an U.N.C.L.E. staff meeting ( Mark's Super Blog: A Wonderful Birthday Memory (http://markssuperblog.blogspot.com/2010/09/wonderful-birthday-memory.html))

While the backstories of Solo as a jewel thief, and Kuryakin as a repressed psycho do not set well with my childhood memories, all in all this was a good attempt to try and introduce the U.N.C.L.E. franchise to an audience of Twitterheads (equivalent of young whippersnappers).

It's an attempt at an origin story. Of course it's not going to have the established format of the TV show. And unless you have voodoo magic to reanimate the corpses of dead actors, you're not going to have Leo G Carroll as Mr Waverly.

I hate to think how many times such a demanding worldview will get disappointed before the truth comes: Things change, but if you have good memories to start with, then you are rich indeed.

I never said that I was speaking for anyone other than myself. I found the film to be insulting to a diehard fan. In the first season, Solo was speaking to Illya about how he was at the UNCLE island training school, when they met. The organization had dozens of offices and thousands of agents worldwide, so to reduce that to hiring a thief, and some robotic Russian thug, is a slap in the face to us old timers. It's like having Kirk as a former child molester, and Spock as a Vulcan serial killer! With no Starfleet or Federation, just some Admiral that Shanghi's the two into working aboard a starship! It just does not play out at all!

Yes, Mark, it is an attempt, but a bad attempt. I find it as offensive as the fact that Tom Cruise killing off "Mr. Phelps" in the first Mission Impossible movie, after making him the bad guy, opening a spot for his own character to be the main good guy! Why do that? There are several IMF groups, according to the original series, Tom's character could be just the head of a different group!

Instead of the old tongue in cheek stories from the old MFU series, we should have had better stories, greater adventures, and maintained the storyline set down in the TV show.

msuperfan

Hey, thanks for explaining your opinion more.

I agree that this movie does contradict or go against things like the "Solo meeting Illya at the UNCLE island training school" from the series. I do have to point out that the climax of the movie could certainly be described as an UNCLE "island training school." (humorous aside)

I think this film is a laudable attempt to do U.N.C.L.E., set in the 1960s, "for today." There's no realistic way they could have "better stories, greater adventures, and maintained the storyline set down in the TV show" as you ask. Because everything, including the actors and the audience, have changed in 50 years.

I'm pretty happy with what we ended up with. This U.N.C.L.E. is not the same as the TV U.N.C.L.E.

For that matter, the second season wasn't like the first, and so on. It's the cumulative warm feelings of being a kid, feeling included with my friends in appreciating "something cool," the depiction of a clear demarcation of right-and-wrong, and many other things. All of this goes into our U.N.C.L.E. memories.

Nothing can bring the experience back.

We must move on in life, with thanks for the good memories we do have.

As I was reminded after going to my high school reunion, things have changed. We have to be thankful for what made our past memories special.

Best wishes to all of my U.N.C.L.E. cousins!

I agree with you, Msuperfan, things have changed, however, they were trying to go back into the early 60's, and should have reflected the way things really were back then, more of an innocent era, to be sure.

There was a movie called "Down with love" that was a parody of the Rock Hudson/Doris Day movies of the late 50's and early 60's, and they pulled it off amazingly well. The film was an enjoyable look back, and everyone pretty much loved it, and it made money. When I saw this film, I was really hoping that Guy Ritchie was going to do something like this, only make the movie a little less tongue in cheek (okay, a LOT less). It could have been done, without spending 75 million dollars in the process! It could have been done!

But now, we will never know.

Thanks!

Just saw this on the plane. Soundtrack reminds me a lot of Ocean's Twelve, with its 60s italian choices.

Guy Ritchie is up there with Tarantino on compiling soundtracks for his movies.
