For years, the true film versions of most of Judy's film musical performances, as well as unreleased numbers, circulated in horrible bootlegs. Even official soundtracks typically just took the songs directly from the films' final audio tracks, leaving in dialogue and sound effects. In the 1990's, however, Rhino Records set out to restore and release a good chunk of material from the Turner Entertainment library, most of it directly from the original recording sessions, even remixing any material where the original multi-track recordings survived in true stereo. (The biggest example of this is Meet Me In St. Louis, where all of the multi-track recording angles survived, allowing the entire film's musical score to be remixed in true stereo.) Along with issuing soundtracks to classics such as The Wizard Of Oz, Meet Me In St. Louis, Gone With The Wind, An American In Paris, Casablanca, Singin' In The Rain, and much more, they also released some mighty fine compilations. In 1996, they had yet to release a compilation centered around the biggest musical star in the Turner library, Judy Garland, but that was about to change. But instead of a "greatest hits" package, they decided instead to be bold and release a double-disc collection of deleted numbers, alternate versions, and rarities. You won't find "Over The Rainbow," "Get Happy," or "The Trolley Song" here. What you will find, however, are 46 incredible numbers, most of which had never been officially released and some that had never even found their way into the hands of bootleggers. You'll find the deleted number "D'ya Love Me" from Till The Clouds Roll By, the original unused version of "Mack The Black" from The Pirate as well as two deleted numbers, and more. The collection closes with most of her numbers from Annie Get Your Gun - although Judy recorded the entire score, she was unable to shoot more than a few scenes before personal problems caused her to be fired from the film. An LP from her fanclub was the only semi-official release of most of these songs for years, except for "You Can't Get A Man With A Gun," which MGM Records issued on multiple compilations over the years. This was the first truly official release for these numbers. A few of Judy's numbers are missing, namely "Doin' What Comes Natur'lly" and "I'm An Indian Too," which oddly enough are the two numbers she managed to film, but the missing numbers would eventually surface on Rhino's release of the film's soundtrack, which contained all of the numbers from the final film with Betty Hutton and the aborted version with Judy.

This download is ripped from my own CD. For many years, this collection was out of print and fetched very high prices on the secondhand market. A digital release was available briefly as well, but has since been pulled. In 2010, Sony Classical in Australia obtained the rights to reissue some of Rhino's soundtrack releases and compilations, and this one was among them. At the time, I could import a copy of this from Amazon sellers for less than $13 after shipping, which was even cheaper than the digital download and way cheaper than any used copy of the original Rhino edition, and the only difference in the two releases is that references and logos for Rhino were replaced by ones for Sony Music, and the sticker that would usually be on the shrinkwrap of the Rhino edition was printed directly on the artwork for this one. Otherwise, the artwork is exactly the same, and the booklet contents are exactly the same. I've included a PDF of scans from the booklet with the download. Sound quality is pretty good considering these recordings are 65-80 years old. If you're a Judy fan, you really need this collection. If you wanna become one, I suggest checking out Judy Garland In Hollywood: Her Greatest Movie Hits first - it's got the well-known numbers you'd want in a "greatest hits" collection. I also suggest checking out Judy At Carnegie Hall.
