Yeah, I know there's already a thread about "Melodies of Life," but my topic is different. I wanna talk about how there were so many variations on this great piece in the game, but you didn't get to hear it until the end. I thought it enhanced the enjoyment of it once you got to hear the song, since you were already familiar with the theme. Here's all of the variations I know of:

Captivating Eyes
Garnet's Song
Garnet's Theme
Eiko's Theme
Crossing Those Hills (Overworld Theme)
Beyond That Door

I think that's all of the variations. My personal favorite is Eiko's Theme. I think it's just really cute and suits her well. However, Garnet's Theme and Crossing Those Hills are also very strong, as Beyond that Door. They are all great pieces in their own ways.

- I didnt had a choice. I had to live. I wanted to come home to you. So, I sang your song. Our song. -

Every single one, For they are amazing.

It's amazing on how Nobuo Uematsu can be so creative on one piece of music.

For me, I'd probably say Garnet's Theme, with Behind the Door a very close second.

As for forgotten variations, there are the two FFIX Coca-Cola TV Commercial themes which Uematsu wrote (one is 15 seconds long, the other a little over 30), along with the a carpella Melodies of Life ~ The Layers of Harmony variation, all of which are included as bonus tracks on the Japanese 4-disc OST CD album.

behind the door, hands down, i really enjoyed it, it just kinda pumped you up while at the same time, calmed you down to think about everything you just went thru in the game :D

My favourite variation would be the world theme (crossing those hills!) it has such a calming melodic sound to it, that i could play that all day, and still be calm at the end of it

Crossing those hills, I always hummed that while I was on the world map :)

Heh, that's neat. I'm a bit different though: I try to sing "Melodies of Life" to it. Except it never quite works right because it's not an exact match, and so I end up humming or singing portions on "la."

i knew of only two variations of Melodies of Life and i listened to Eiko's theme about 10 times in a row and couldn't hear any of the words (i was singing it in my head) in her theme.
i still like her theme and dagger's theme as the best though

I think it's a different version of Eiko's Theme. The one that plays when they return to Alexandria at the start of Disc 3. I'm pretty sure it's different.

Incidentally, there is also a new instrumental version of Melodies of Life included with FFXI - it's used as the main title music for the online version of Tetra Master included with FFXI. It's not bad rendition, but it does get repeatative (but hey, anything is better than the godawful music that was used with TM in FFIX...).

I voted Eiko's theme, so cute! And it changes after Garnet finds out her past, and plays when Eiko is in Alexandria Castle in Disc 3. Also, in Madain Sari, doesn't Eiko sing Melodies of life, like Garnet's Song? The voice is different, isn't it when Garnet hears Eiko singing that she finally remembers her past? Kinda hazy... I'm playing it through again!

XD Enki, I happen to LIKE the Quadmist theme... ;)

For this, hard choice, but I ultimately went with "Crossing Those Hills." If there's one song that REALLY hands-down makes me want to play FF9 whenever I listen to it, it's this version of the song. I still remember the first time I played FF9, that theme was the one that was playing when it suddenly struck me how much I was really enjoying the game. I was like, "Wait a sec... this is the world map... I haven't turned this game off since I started it and it's been a few HOURS. I've never played a game straight through for this long and felt like I didn't wanna stop playing!"

So that version of the song is just total memory lane. So I've gotta go with that one. ^_^
