A CERTAIN SMILE was one of two romance novels by French author Franoise Sagan that were adapted to film in 1958 (the other was “Bonjour Tristesse”.) Despite boasting an all star cast and gorgeous French location CinemaScope colour cinematography, the film was a rather lackluster production. The one outstanding element was Alfred Newman’s impressionistic score interpolating the beautiful title song by Sammy Fain & Paul Francis Webster throughout in addition to two of his loveliest original themes. Columbia Records issued a soundtrack album from the film, but Johnny Mathis’ soundtrack performance was replaced with a more pop flavoured version on the album. The rest of the album featured orchestral cues from the actual soundtrack sessions since the score was recorded in Europe and, unlike most soundtrack albums of the period, did not have to be re-recorded with a smaller ensemble to avoid double payment to the orchestra. Also at about 45 minutes, the album featured essentially the entire score except for about 10 minutes of source cues. Several years ago, La-La-Land released a limited edition 2 CD set which contained the entire score from Fox’s 3 track original magnetic masters and the licensed Columbia album as well but by this time several cues on the magnetic master were damaged. This new DSD remaster of the complete soundtrack, with one exception, is from a inch 3 track tape source that was in fairly great shape. Track 13 (at the Dance), missing on the inch tape, is from a copy of the same magnetic master used to produce the 2 CD set. The cues in this remastering are configured differently than any previous version of this soundtrack in that the score is assembled with the best musical presentation in mind rather than fidelity to the music’s original order in the film itself. Also, the source cues are placed after the dramatic score as bonus tracks. The sound perspective is also very different from the both the Columbia LP and the La-La-Land versions. Another bonus track that is exclusive to this remastering is a 13 minute Concert Suite version of the score entitled “A Certain Smile: Themes and Variations”, which was arranged by Alfred Newman’s long time associate, Ken Darby in the 1970s for several symphony orchestra performances of Newman’s film music, reconstructed using soundtrack elements according to Darby’s notations. I hope you enjoy it.
