Nintendo President Satoru Iwata Dies At 55 (http://kotaku.com/nintendos-president-has-passed-away-1717386412)

Nintendo has just issued a short statement announcing that president Satoru Iwata has passed away at the age of 55.

The statement reads:

Nintendo Co., Ltd. deeply regrets to announce that President Satoru Iwata passed away on July 11, 2015 due to a bile duct growth.

Iwata was forced to skip last year’s E3 due to his poor health, and shortly afterwards underwent surgery to remove the bile duct growth. A few months later, in the wake of concerns over his health, he said via Twitter “I’m progressing well”.

A talented programmer, Iwata first joined Nintendo’s HAL Laboratory in the 1980s, where he worked on games like Balloon Fight and EarthBound. He became a Director of the company in 2000, and in 2002 was appointed as only the fourth President of Nintendo when he succeeded Hiroshi Yamauchi.

In his time as President, Iwata oversaw some of the strongest (Wii, DS) and weakest (GameCube, Wii U) periods in Nintendo’s history as a video game company. In recent times, he developed almost cult status as the host of the Nintendo Direct programs.

An immensely popular figure both within the industry and with Nintendo fans, he will be sorely missed. Rest in Peace, Mr. Iwata.

RIP Mr. Iwata...

some say he was a great president, some say he is the reason the wii was so weak, and that the wu is in a distant third.
i have no opinion. but i do hope the new president makes nintendo the dominant system again.

Who the hell closed the gay marriage thread? Back in my day that shit wouldn't have flown, I'd have reopened that shit in a heartbeat. Best thread on this forum in years, we had ROKUSHO, had mr gold getting all offended, little debate about whether cartoon child porn is legal, it was great. :/

Personally, I really enjoy the Wii U... just hope that Nintendo allows more third party development and not shoehorn them to unrealistic deadlines. I think Nintendo's days of being 'Top Dog' are in the past, but as long as they can still prove to be a competent competitor in the Console wars, hopefully it'll give MS and Sony the kick in the ass to be better.

This has NOTHING to do with the thread topic. Please keep comments relevant to the thread and not deviate on to something else. Thanks.

iwata wasnt a man that, as a gamer i either looked up to or any other feeling. his passing, while saddening, isnt as terrible to me as will be miyamoto's death.

I might not be a fan of Nintendo, but I'm a fan of videogames, and this man contributed a heck of a lot to the medium, all of which was either innovative or well-received (or both).

Shocked to hear this news, especially since he was relatively young.

May he rest in peace.

He made a lot of great contributions to gaming and was the face of Nintendo to me for a big chunk of my life, so RIP, Mr. Iwata.

I like you TK, I really do, but this isn't the place to continue your flamewar with Rokusho.

As for Iwata-san, before he was a "criticized" Nintendo president, he had a sincere love for videogames. he worked on so many games I've loved : Super Mario Bros, DK country, Zelda II and the kirby series...

RIP Iwata-San...

I just picked the first thread down on the list since apparently the goofball moderator who closed it didn't even see fit to say why. If that's how it works around here now I figure it might as well be a free for all. But I'll probably fuck off back to STS soon, I just came to visit Professor Koosherson for a while.

I didn't have time to explain why i closed that thread but at the same time i'm pretty sure i didn't need to. I needed to catch a bus to work and i hadn't been around much of the weekend to know what was going on in it, otherwise i would have closed it sooner. Yourself and Rokusho were probably the main reason it was closed in the first place. And now you come into another thread to derail it because you didn't have any more opportunities to make witty remarks against him. Your only reason for posting there was to continue a flamewar.

I apologise to Darth Revan for further polluting his thread.

with all due respect TK, there is a difference between "Fun" and "disrespect". this thread is about Satoru Iwata's passing. not about your goddamn flamewar. pollute any other thread if you wish, but not one paying homage to a dead man.

To be honest, I've been trying to leave it alone, but everybody keeps making posts directed at me and then apologizing to Darth Revan. Like... make up your minds, guys.

He always seemed surprisingly genuine for an exec. Will miss him most for his work on Earthbound and Kirby.
