If you're a fan of The Wizard Of Oz, you absolutely NEED to download this 2-disc out-of-print gem. This 2-CD set features the complete score from the original cut of the film, meaning that not only is all of the music from the film here, but also here are underscore from deleted scenes, underscore that was dropped from scenes that remained, and songs that were deleted from the film, including the famed "Jitterbug" number. In addition, disc 2 features plenty of supplemental material - demos, rehearsals, alternate takes, etc., all lovingly remastered from the best surviving sources by Rhino Records in 1995 and presented in a beautiful longbox with an extensive booklet of liner notes, all of which I've scanned from my own copy and included in PDF form. The booklet includes lots of rare behind the scenes pictures plus extensive notes on the making of the film, notes on the recording of the music, and even a synopsis of the film that notes where each track places in the film, including outtake material, and provides further notes on some of the tracks, as well as notes on the supplemental material from disc 2. While some beloved film soundtracks continue to be reissued time and time again and still don't manage to get it quite right (*cough The Sound Of Music cough*), this one is absolutely perfect. A must-have for any lover of The Wizard Of Oz.

Out of the entire score, I would love to hear the original stereo mixes for the track "The Cyclone." I never realized how having one channel missing could destroy such a beautiful work of art. To those in the know, some cues were recorded stereo however only one of the two channels could be located so what we essentially have is a faulty mono track to tide us over. It says something about it in the booklet. The isolated music track on nearly every home video incarnation features the complete stereo image mixed down to mono albeit with distracting SFX. This is the best edition to date but hearing how the film sounds so open in 5.1, I fail to believe that another big release won't come out eventually which will correct some issues I have with the set.

The Story And Songs CD from Rhino actually IS in stereo - some simulated, some true, but it's definitely in stereo. It also doesn't have that odd volume jump in "Over The Rainbow" that's in every Rhino release of that song. I do wish Rhino had allowed whatever tracks they had the stereo elements for to be presented on this set in stereo, especially since they've had no problem having a mix of stereo and mono on other soundtracks and compilations.
