I can't really speak for the rest of you, but I know my so called "favorite" song tends to change constantly. I'm always trying to discover new music, and as thus am always falling in love with a new song.

One of the reasons I like checking the "What Song Are You Listening To" thread is to check out what other people are listening to, but there's only so much you can tell from a name.

So what I'm hoping to do here is have people post a song or two that they're totally in love with right now, and give a brief explanation of why they like the song so much.

If there's a place to download the song free and legally, posting a link to that would be awesome. :)

Anyways. At the moment, I'm really in love with this Tom Waits song called "Another Man's Wine". I've been a fan of Tom Waits for years and years, and he just has the coolest voice- Louie Armstrong is the closest person I can think of to compare him to, but Tom Waits has this dark quality to his voice that makes the gravely voice thing even cooler.

Musically, the song sounds like something out of an old 40's detective radio show, to me anyways. It's hard to explain, but it's really cool.

I've been told Tom Waits is something of an aqquired taste, but eh. I've always liked him. But at any rate, this is probably the sort of song that will grow on you.

You can download it
here. (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000066RVA/ref=j_disp_dwnld_2/103-7996719-6867032?v=glance&s=music&st=digital-music)

Have it downloading at the moment.

"The Tide" by The Spill Canvas has to be my favourite song at the moment. The Spill Canvas is led by Nick Thomas, Writer and Singer of all their material. He's a mean acoustic guitarist that writes powerful and very vivid lyrics. It's hard to explain just why I enjoy this song so much. It just speaks to me. I suggest you google the lyrics as you listen.

http://www.purevolume.com/thespillcanvas

Edit: Ok I have now listened to "Another Man's Vine", It sounds oddly familiar. I feel like I've heard it in a movie but, alas, the name of it escapes me O_o

A good listen none the less

I'm currently riveted by The Microphones in general. Specifically, "I Want Wind to Blow" and "The Glow Pt. 2."

"I Want Wind to Blow" has an amazing sense of open space. Stereo acoustic guitars and a low, rhythmic rumble create a wave of barely audible noise that floats through the mid-frequencies. It uses repetition and understatement to transform itself from a simple song into a landscape.

"The Glow Pt. 2" opens with a blast of fuzzy guitars before giving way abruptly to more stereo acoustics, which themselves give way to multitracked organs. While all of this is going on, Phil Elvrum delivers what I consider to be his best lyrics thus far. I still get a shiver down my spine everytime I listen to him sing "blood."

My highest reccomendation.

Satoukibibatake (http://ribaldyouth.com/mp3/-%20%90X%8eR%97%c7%8eq%20-%20%82%b3%82%c6%82%a4%82%ab%82%d1%94%a8.mp3)

It's really long, slow, and repetetive, but I absolutely love it. The song is a memorial of sorts for the people that lost their fathers during the American occupation of Okinawa in WW2. I heard it for the first time 2 years ago and was attracted by the "zawawa" line which stayed in my head for...ever.

Plus I love the old sound it has to it. The original version of the song was made in 1967, but I've yet to find it anywhere.

I liked the first two songs posted in here, although the crybaby voice of the lead singer made Jester's a struggle for me.

I rather enjoyed "Satoukibi batake". I tried googling the english lyrics but to no avail. Despite it being quite long and repetitive, I never found it to drag on. A good listen

The Mic's are teh shitage. Very good call.

I'm listening to a band called Ever Since Radio. Its a break to someone like me who listens to alot Indie. I usually don't listen to rock cuz stupid but these guys aren't half bad.

The song I recomend is The makout Disaster (http://www.purevolume.com/eversinceradio). I tend to like this one because of the lyrics and vocal melodies. The drum tracks are kind of predictable but contribute to the overall arrangement. So yeah....I love these guys check um out.

edit: And <3's to Mandi for making such a lovely thread. I tried to pull something similar off a while back but it didn't work out. It makes more sense than the "What song..." witch has become damn near spam.

Trollhammaren from Finntroll has got me at the mo. The instant I heard it, I fell in love. It's a folk black metal song, btw, so I dunno how many members here would be interested. It' starts off with a fantastic, catchy flute/accordian intro, that'll have you clappin your hands and stompin your foot. On the first listen, this is the part where I became a bit fearful, were heavy guitars and vocals gonna ruin the flow and melody of the song? Hello no! The folk and metal aspects compliment each other very well, working in perfect harmony, no wonder it made it into the Finnish top 10 = D

If you'd like the mp3, click here (http://mp3.centurymedia.com/Finntroll_Trollhammaren_Nattfodd.mp3)

The band isn't exactly new, but I've recently really got into The Mars Volta. (http://www.themarsvolta.com/) Thier album Deloused in the Comatorium reminds me a lot of Pink Floyd sonically. It really sounds nice, electronic and rock mixed together with wonderful sounding lyrics (I say wonderful sounding, because unlike Pink Floyd, who had a definite meaning behind all thier lyrics, Volta's lyrics are a little more open to interpretation). Plus I always enjoy band who make albums where all the songs are good and worth listening to.

I've also been listening to Matisyahu (http://www.hasidicreggae.com/) who is a raggae singer that is Jewish. I originally got intrigued simply because I thought it would be kind of funny... I mean a jew singing raggae? However, I soon found out that he's actually pretty good. The music, the lyrics, the way he sings.. it's all right on and sounds really good, that is if you actually like raggae. Other than the fact that he's jewish and sometimes includes that in his lyrics it's pretty much typical raggae stuff. Don't get me wrong, it's still really good, but it's not like some new crazy twist that totally changes the face of raggae or anything, it's just a jewish guy who sings raggae pretty good. You can download some of the songs free here. (http://www.hasidicreggae.com/index.php?section=article&id=23)

I also got 404'd on all the Tegan and Sara songs, even when I went to thier site, oh well.

Most of the songs I play a lot come from movie soundtracks. Mainly because I watch the film and the music played in the background enhances the scene tenfold, so I think it is so awesome i'll go and but it/download it and play it to hell.

So at the moment I tend to play Someday by Chad Kroeger a lot because its the closing track of the movie Torque (I don't care if you think the movies lame, I thought it was pretty entertaining).

Also, I play the Great Escape theme tune probably more than any other, usually when England just scrape a win in a major tournament match. :)

My current song infatuation is Slaughter of the Soul by At the Gates. The guitar riffs and song arrangement are incredible to me, I love the sound. The vocal style of course is a bit goblinish and not my favorite but I tolerate it, because the guitar playing and drums really, really do it for me.

My previous song infatuation was Inner Universe by Yoko Kanno, because I was impressed how far she'd come with composing electronic music. There's some really beautiful stuff going on there, vocals and melody wise, and some really cool programming.
